Laser Surgery

Just a cautionary note...I know they warn you that you may suffer from this and may suffer from that as a diabetic.

Suffered my first real side affect of the diabetes associated with high blood pressure. Had an oedema (leakage) in my right eye. Had to go for laser eye surgery which involved firing some 100 pulses in to my eye. As they made clear this doesn't really fix BUT stops deterioration resulting from the bleeds. For a number they had to get really quite close to centre of the eye and I was cautioned not to move at all. Back in four months for a review. Really quite a wake up call on blood sugar levels and also BP.

I think as a cautionary note to others, don't treat some of the messages as scare mongering, unfortunately they are true. Podiatrist on Wednesday, hope she has something better to say :)

Sorry to hear you've had to go through this! I don't know whether others would agree with me or not but I think there should be more information out there for people with diabetes on the way the condition can affect the eyes. I did not realise how badly the eyes could be affected by diabetes. Ii hadn't realised with me being newly diagnosed just how badly diabetes can affect a persons eyes until I spoke with my regular optometrist today, I did ask him to be brutally honest and not sugar coat things. The diabetic team and my GP just skimmed over the subject telling me that I would notice deterioration of eyesight and within 20 years I would loose partial vision!

Thank you for your post, I hope it makes others see that these kinds of stories aren't scare mongering and that these things happen to ordinary people. Good luck with the Podiatrist :)
