Hi All

James went to his Clinic yesterday. DSN and Consultant very pleased with results. Thyroid OK Urine OK, Coeliac antibodies 1 (Brilliant) and HbA1C 7.4. Gained an amazing 4cms in 3 months and 2.2kg

I told consultant I was hoping for a lower HbA1c which made him rolls his eyes  He said he would not like his reading to be less than this, his diet is very good and as he is a growing lad it would be too strict on him, giving him a lot of hypos, which I suppose I can accept, and interestingly today when I opened up to come into the forum I saw these headlines

Is intensive diabetes management safe?

How low is too low for an HbA1c? Many of us try hard to get our HbA1c close to 7% as research has consistently shown that diabetic complications are generally reduced with tighter blood glucose control.

However, there has been discussion whether HbA1c targets under 7% could be too low as a target.

Maybe I should relax a bit more and keep on doing what I am doing.

We are tweeking again now as James has come down with a sore throat and head cold so here we go again.

Onwards and upwards

Well it sounds like both you and your Son are doing a great job in looking after his Diabetes and his general health so well done to both of you :D
An interesting point though Stoney, I think it is trying to get a balance between what you want to do and your control, ie trying to balance life in general ,activities ect and getting a decent HbA1C to try and limit complications...though my Diabetic nurse say's this is not a guarantee that you will be complication free.
She says she see's Diabetics with great HbA1c's and they still get Diabetic complications and at the other end of the spectrum there are people with poor HbA1C's for a lot of years and they stay complication free. My theory on this is if I try my best with my control, and try to limit them, if they do come along then I won't feel so guilty.... in that it was not all my own doing

I remember through both my Diabetic pregnancies ,it is very much pushed home to you about causing birth defects, complications ect due to poor control and I was paranoid...I think expectant mothers are even if they have not got Diabetes. I had my Hba1C's throughout both pregnancies between 5 and 6 and I remember living with a lot of hypo's to get my control that good and not being able to do a lot physically and it being pretty stressful to be honest.

I could manage it for 9 months at a time, but for a life time, no thanks  There does have to be a balance, so I think your Son's Endo is right...but I do understand as a Mum you would worry.
Sounds like you are both doing just great though :D

For some people a HbA1c lower than 7.0 (126 mg) is too low and they fail to function, constantly low all the time. But when blood sugars remain lower for longer you become less aware of them apparantly which is why I was happily chasing a spider round my bathroom the other day feeling pretty good at a blood sugar of 2.6 mmol (47 mg) ! I only tested because it was time for lunch.

The thing with keeping bg levels as near to those people who are not diabetic is that the brain just adapts to the lower levels as being normal and you will only get awareness of bg dropping when those levels go down to way below what you are able to function with normally.

It's not good really especially if you find that your awareness only kicks in when bg levels drop down to being between 2.5 - 3.5mmol. This is why it's so important to test bg levels frequently.
