Hi all, haven't been on here for quite some time, yesterday I had my diabetic check with the nurse after having my bloods done last week, to my horror my latest hba1c test was 10.1, my doctor did try to get hold of me but I was in work, I haven't done anything different since getting it down to 6.1, I have lost some weight which I am very pleased about, I eat a healthy diet, ok the occasional slip, but the nurse said that is ok, on diagnosis I was taking 3 500mg metformin a day, but because I was showing signs of sensitivity my doctor reduced it to only one 500mg metformin a day, the nurse said that was no where near enough, and the cumulative effect has made my blood sugars go up so much, what is the normal dose of metformin. Hope you can help
 
Are you on the slow release version of metformin?

I was until recently on what I was told the max 0f 3000 mg a day 2 tablets 3 times a day. When my meds were changed recently I queried the amount of metformin and it was reduces to 2000 mg. When my meds were changed yet again I double checked again and was told 2000 mg was the now recommended max dose of metformin.

If you can't tolerate metformin in any form they are other meds that can be used, but I don't know enough about these other meds, apart from some can reduce your BS enough to give you hypo's.
 
Hi. Metformin doesn't have much effect on blood sugar whatever the dose and is at it's best to improve insulin sensitivity for those who are overweight. If you are having a sensible low-carb diet and don't have a high BMI then I would be suspicious that you may be a Late Onset T1 (LADA) and not T2. At that level of HBa1C then I think you should discuss other options with the doc such as adding Glic and Sitaglitpin to your meds or just moving over to insulin; a figure of 10.1needs urgent action. Do keep an eye on your meter readings and watch out for ketones
