LCHF and Intermittent Fasting

Hi. Can anyone shed some light on the following. I am a T2 since March 2016. I am diet controlled and my bg levels have gradually reduced over this time. I eat a LCHF diet and in December introduced 16:8 fasting. I have no problems with implementing the fasting. However, my bg seems to have gone up a notch. Before fasting I was regularly hitting 4+ mmol fasting bg and my post prandial bgs were late 5s early 6s and I was very pleased. Anyhow I read that intermittent fasting was good for reducing insulin resistance and wanted to give my body the best chance possible to stay fairly " normal" for as long as I can. However, as I said, it seems that my bgs have raised. I rarely achieve a fasting near 4 it's now averaging out nearer 5.5 and my post prandial bgs are averaging in the late 6s early 7s. Does anyone have any thoughts about this. I have also lost more weight since IF and was wondering whether I'm loosing muscle mass and thus reducing my "storage bank" facility (I am 6feet 1 and weigh 13st 3 lbs). I'm confused about what to do. Thanks for any advice please.

You could sign up for Diet Doctor (if you're not already a member). Then you can ask Dr Jason Fung, a leading authority on fasting, a direct question yourself. It may take him a day or two to answer, but he's very good, if a little terse, in answering.

From my reading about IF the research indicates that there is no loss of muscle from the fasting. How about activity level or muscle maintaining activity?

£86 a year to be told, (tersely), it's physiological insulin resistance?

But, to actually answer the op, what is your exercise regime, what is your BMI, and more importantly, what do you look like in the mirror?

Yes, Fung can also be reached via his blog, Intensive Dietary Management - which is a wealth of fascinating information - although i don't know if he personally responds to blog comments. i know that he has a staff member that helps with the blog.

If you are interested in signing up for the DietDoctor website, the first month is free, with no obligation to continue, so there is plenty of time to decide if you want to stay a member.

those numbers are suprisingly similar to mine as I did more 16:8 fasting they seem to stick around the 5's for fasting and 7.5 ish post prandial Im currently experimenting with 14:10 starting first meal at 10am

I'm the same my BG levels where in the 4/4.5 I fasted yesterday for 24 hours, this morning 5.7 nothing to eat until 12.40 pm today 6 before food. Not able to test 2 hrs later had to go out had smoked mackerel 150g. Evening meal 5.30 ish salmon stir fry its chow mien sauce small portion noodles my reading is now 9.1 I know I'm very resistant to carbs but it was not even a full sheet of noodles full sheet 43g carbs I reckon half this.for last month I've been 4 to 5 and under 7 after eating I do occasionally 24 hr fasts and 16/17 hour fasts every day.Anyone out there can tell me what's going on ,I am usually don't eat carbs.

Hmmmm. Since IF my exercise regime has slipped as I don't seem to have the energy. However, when I reduced my exercise before IF it didn't really impact.

My exercise routine hasn't really changed. I do 100 sit-ups every morning, fast walking for half hour and three times a week light weights. My BMI is 24. I don't tend to look in the mirror. My wife says I look pale and I'm always cold.

Hmmmm. Never thought of that.

That's interesting and similar to me. I don't eat any carbs at all other than those in veg. I have stopped all sugar, pasta, bread, rice, grains, oats, beans and still my blood is rising when fasting.

I Jonnoras I have been reading Brunneria Marks daily Apple it make for interesting reading so I will carry on intermittent fasting and a couple ot 24 hour fasts in week and see how it goes. I don't want to go back to uncontrollable blood glucose levels and it works in weight and inches losses, but my doctor wants a fasting blood test from me in April and you know how they think high readings you need Metformin.I refused point blank to take it again too many side effects for me so I will keep to this new way of eating plan not diet has it's for the rest of our lives if we want to stay healthy.
So good luck to you and if you hear any other info.on the subject let me know?Regards Kathleen

Thanks Kathleen. I will. J

Just a thought but did you check the chow mein sauce? Could be a nasty carb fest with sugar.

Sauces usually have thickeners and sugar of some type. I steer clear. They always get me in trouble as innocent as they look. I only eat my own sauces

Thanks again for answering my question when I checked the chow mien sauce it was 15 g carbs but the small portion of noodles should have been the probable cause another meal to avoid. I tried what bulkbiker I think had wrote at one time about dawn chorus BG and before I went to bed I had a large spoon of full fat yogurt my fasting BG this morning had dropped to 5.1.Cannot tell you how helpful you all are, without the advice on here it would have been so much harder to workout what I'm doing wrong. So a huge thank you to you all.KathleenXX

BG 5.1 fasting before lunch 5.2 after lunch 2 hrs 4.9 after evening meal 5.8 and I went for a 1hr walk with hubby and our pugs before lunch, not been out walking for about 6 months. Felt very low after I fell off the wagon in May last year but back on track no energy couldn't be bothered to do anything. Since getting back on track I'm buzzing and nothing too much trouble so really anyone out there who's been where I was just take it one day at a time lots of help and advice on here and give it another try if I can do it you can.

I know this is a little late to the table but I couldn't help but reply! I feel from my knowledge after reading Jason Fung's books and so much of his blog it's taken over my life, that your rise is because the insulin is no longer there trying to force the glucose into the liver and therefore it starts to empty out into the blood, it's not actually a bad thing since it will prevent fatty liver and give you better health in the long run, this will stop happening once you have done so much fasting that your liver is no longer bursting at the seams with glycogen.
