Hi, I was diagnosed with type 2 over a year ago with Hba1c of 68mmol and went on a LCHF diet for 6 months, lost23 kilos in weight and my mmol went down to 38, in the mean time I went off the diet and started eating normally again and although my mmol rose to 43 and I put on 5 kilos but I felt OK. My Bg varied between 9 & 6, more often the lower , I was concerned that my weight was rising so decided to go back on the LCHF diet and did so a week ago, my weight dropped 2kilos straight away but my BG rose from 6 to 8 and today 9.5, I have been taking 2 metformin for the last year and have recently gone back onto statins , these have been changed from Simvastatin to Lipitor or Atorvastatin, does anyone have any idea why my BG should rise, by the way I am also doing more exercise and I am 70 years old but quite fit, thanks for any help anyone can give, it will be appreciated. Trevor

There could be many reasons for this but the most obvious one might be the statin, as they are known to raise BG. You might want to ask your doctor what your triglyceride, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels are, as "total cholesterol" level is not as helpful in deciding whether a statin is needed. If you do need a statin, and choose to take one, fine, but just be aware it may affect your BG.

Good luck and I hope things get back on track soon.

Thanks I thought this might be the case.

Hi . Can I ask what you call low carbs . Iv found if I go to low my levels creep up at night . I'm assuming my liver is putting out glucose to compensate for the low BG levels at night

LCHF is really a way of eating, not a diet ! I do have to odd extra carb now after two years of LCHF & it has no impact on my sugar levels. Statins will also increase your blood sugars, I stopped taking my statins with the guidance of my heart failure nurse.

Hi Clive, In not on really low carbs , just cut out bread, potatoes, pasta etc. I suppose between 50-75 g, I think its the statins . I have stopped taking them and will see where my BG is in a week, then, if I have returned to normal , I will see my GP. The worrying thing is that there is a lot of talk online the Lipitor can cause diabetes and even the leaflet with the tablets says that 1 in 10 may developed diabetes and have raised BG levels especially women. The GP has just put my wife on them so I am testing her to see if her levels rise, they seem to be handing them out like smarties without any connection to diabetes. Thanks Trevor
