Hi again,
Do you think to get a hold if my diabetes and weight loss I'd be better doing slimming world rather than LCHF?
I'm thinking that things are limited on SW like cheese and you can't eat full fat yogurts.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated xx

It sounds like you should do the one you think you have the most chance of staying on, so really it's personal choice for you.
Both work well.

i did slimming world 5 years ago and put weight on

I belonged to Slimming World for 6 months. I got a free referral from my GP. I found it very useful to weigh there regularly and this is how I found out that my own scales at home weighed 3 lbs light. Although I belonged to SW I followed LCHF ( I didn't tell them) I didn't follow the SW diet because there was so much talk of low fat spreads and diet drinks and buying their own chocolate bars. All of these are very processed and the less processed your food is, the better it is for you and your diabetes. Snacks (syns) were allowed and I didn't think this would get me out of the bad habit of picking up a pack of something as a snack. By doing LCHF I eat 2 or 3 meals a day and am fully satisfied.

So my vote definitely goes to LCHF. I have tried weight watchers too, GI diet, GL diet, Dukan diet, cabbage soup diet, 600 calories for 7 weeks, 800 calories, fasting for 3 days, an older version of the 5:2 diet years back, and diet pills and meal replacements. LCHF beats them all in my book. I tend to do the LC bit well and then for the high fat I make sure I don't have any low fat alternatives. if I'm hungry (I'm not usually) I have a piece of cheese or put butter on my veggies (big fat slices of it - yum)

edit: also the special booklet for diabetics with SW is very vague. it doesn't give you any real info at all. It says things like 'eat a healthy diet' and 'exercise', with no real clue as to what is healthy for a diabetic.

No not 500g, but sometimes when I hadn't had enough calories in the day, I made them up to 1200 by having 500-600 calories of cheese. That's quite a chunk, is very filling and is fully allowed on LCHF. Mmmmm I like cheese

After nearly 15 years of trying to lose weight the only one that worked for me was low carbing, full fat!
You would suit it to suit you! Eat to your meter and stay in control!

I followed SW green days for over a year. High carb/low fat. In my opinion, it "broke" my metabolism

I vote for LCHF, or if you do go down the SW road, do red days and avoid all those muller lights that people rave about.

Oh I had forgotten the muller lights!
LOL It seemed to be a competition to shoehorn as many muller lights in as possible. (Mercifully, I avoided them due to the gelatine they contained)

Nic - I've never done Slimming World, so can't make any comparative comment.

I didn't go down the HF, when I reduced carbs. I just concentrated on reducing my carbs, as simply as I could. The weight fell off me. I do eat more fat now, because I need to maintain the very slight frame that was revealed when my love handles disappeared.

I think the bottom line is that for most people, they find the foods that impact their bloods most dramatically are carbs, so to get the bloods in line, the carbs have to be curbed. Most people find that just getting their numbers into a decent place results in weight loss. I rather enjoyed the simplicity of it all. I planned a week's main meals at a time, before doing my shopping. It just meant I always knew I had food I would enjoy, in the house, and actually not having to think each day what's for tea took some of the pressure off.

I might be inclined to save the club fee, and use this forum as your group support. The group support would be the only potential upside for me, but at least here, "the group" understand some of the particular challenges faced on a daily basis..

Apart from the food choices (even a Muller Lite will trigger carb cravings for me) you have to ask yourself, are you the kind of person willing to turn out, after work, on a chill winter evening, to be pepped up for another week of dieting? And do you want to be weighed in public?

I don't.

But it really works for some. A minority. A few.

And there's always the lifetime membership. So if you rebound, you can go back again. For ever...

I remember going to ww meetings and 'rewarding' myself with a take away if I had lost weight! I'm a carb craver. I'm an all or nothing person. I can't have a few carbs as I'll then want more. Lchf has been my life saver.

What I can't get my head around is, if the whole malarkey works, why would you NEED to go back ?

Well, it doesn't work.
Something like 95% never reach their goal weight.
And of the successful 5 %, all but one-in-million have put it all back on within 2 years. Plus a bit.

Think I'm making it up?

This is why I eat LC enough fat. It isn't a diet. It's a way of eating I will do, guided by my meter, for the rest of my life. The fact I'm losing weight is a stunningly wonderful bonus. But my BG comes first. Always.
