I have been adding grated cheese to my lunch as it is low carb and filling. Yesterday I happened to notice the label on the prepacked grated cheese...it contains potato starch and has 3 times the carbs of a block of cheese:mad:.

You would be amazed the places they put flour and/or potato.Gravy is a good one and the usual kiev, goujon, dipper, nuggett. You must pay attention.

I know I just didn't expect it to be in cheese. I thought cheese would be cheese!

My nurse said that I was being silly because, of course, chicken kievs are chicken and it is the bread crumbs that are the problem. I made a video from that TV program that investigated them and found that they get six kievs from one chicken breast. She no longer mentions it.

Thanks for the heads up, aqualung. I have been throwing grated cheese in my omelette in the mornings as I am usually in a rush. Just checked and there are spuds in my aldi mature grated cheese (1.7g carbs per 100g) Not a lot, but it all adds up. Will switch to block. Cheers.

Ooh I have just found a new job for my now redundant potato peeler! It is slicing cheese very thinly with ease.

Must stop eating it lol

Potato starch apparently is added to grated cheese to prevent it clumping together. Aldi's 30% less fat grated cheddar has altogether 1.7g per100g carbs

Thats like today I bought some Aldi sugar free jelly. It wasn't till I was mixing it up earlier that I spotted it has 23g carbs per 100g!! Nearly 3 times as much as Hartleys, looking at the ingrediants list I cant see where they come from.

Oh well its still pretty low carb.

is that 100g once water added or 100g of the granules?

I think granules. It worked out about 0.7g per quarter pint made up, whereas haryleys is only 0.2g per quarter pint. Thats strawberry, raspberry works out at 0.5g, just spotted hartleys flavours are diff too. Lemon n lime 0.2g the berry ones are 0.4g.

So all in all not a huge difference.

I have some of that in the cupboard and again didn't look at the carbs of that either!

That is one thing I need to learn about, checking my carb intake as I have been prone to overloading before now, thinking that it was the correct way to fuel my body.

Sorry, but I think you've mis read the nutrition info:)
23g per 100g sold but there's only 11.5g in a packet! Each 140ml (1/4 pt = 0.7g carb, just a tiny bit more than Hartley and half the price.

Hi
I had brought some grated cheese for the first time the other day. Have just checked the packs. Sainsburys extra mature Taw Valley contains potato starch 1.7g carbohydrate per 100g. President Emmental grated 0.3g carb per 100g
