Hi everyone, I am new to the forum, but would like to tell my little story, and hope it may help someone.
I was do to go into hospital for a hysterectomy TODAY, but the consultant has had to pospone because my blood sugar is through the roof (type 2) (12.1)
I was sent to see the specialist diabetic nurses, on the 6th Feb, who suggested I needed to go on insulin! which I didn't really want to do, but eventually agreed! at the moment I am on 2 x 1000mg slow release Metformin and Victoza.
I was sent home with a blood glucose monitor and told a prescription would be ready in a few days, and to test my blood sugar before breakfast and before my eavening meal. I was due to go back today to start my insulin course. I admitted to the nurse that I had not been taking all my medication as I should and that I was not tolerating the dose of 1.2 of my Victoza very well. I kept being sick, but also bringing back the Metformin tablet. I had spoken to my doc the week before to ask if I could try doing 2 injections of 0.6, one morning and one evening. He said yes.
I was also not eating for most of the day and had no appetite until about 4pm. I mistakenly thought this would do no harm, as after all, didn't we have to fast before our Hba1c to get the best reading! How wrong I was. She told me that if I don't eat, my liver will release large amounts of glucose into my bloodstream to compensate!
From that date only last week, I have made myself eat wether I want it or not! maybe porride or a couple of breakfast biscuits in the morning. For dinner maybe a bacon sarnie or just bacon or sausage without the bread. Then my usual meal for tea (or dinner) as some people say now.
I can now say after only a week that my levels have come right down and are now between 5.5 and 6.7
I phoned the diabetic nurse and told her and she said that if I can keep it like that, I don't need to go on th insulin, but I will still have to wait some weeks befor I have another Hba1c. If that is ok, I can let my consultant know at the hospital, and he will give me another date, but this will probably now be the end of April or May. So I learned my lesson the hard way! My op would have been done now! Sorry the story is so long, but I thought there may be a couple of things newbies like me could pick up on.
Thanks for listening. regards Linda
