Letting medics know

I believe my friend wears a chain with a medical logo on, and 'Diabetes' engraved on the back.

I wear a bracelet that i get complimented on quite alot. but i also carry a card in my purse that says im disbetic,but if its not for you you could wear a necklace, some website even do dog tags, if not then in sure just a card in your purse is sufficent but my personal opinion is if i collapse i would want them to know straight away what is needed being diabetic and the first place they check is wrists neck area and ankles. hope this helps x

A bracelet etc is only required if you are unable to speak or unconscious. When I was knocked off my bike by a car door, I made sure that I told everyone standing around that I had type 1 diabetes, in case I lost consciousness before the ambulance arrived, which I didn't, so told the ambulance crew when they arrived and A&E staff when I got there. Simple! I believe that ambulance personnel look for medic ID wrist bracelet or necklace and then wallet in case of an unconscious casualty, but not tattoos. The fancier the jewelry, the less likely it will be inspected.

I have a stainless steel bracelet with a cadduceus and the relevant information on it. I also think I'm going to put the info on my Phone. I have ICE and my husband's mobile number and daughter's on there.
I'm not afraid of diabetes causing any kind of emergency, but I have a healthy respect for a Reading Transport bus.Especially the purple ones. :twisted: ( they all seem to be driven by Aspiring F1,-ers) A Glucose drip would knock me off the 5% club sofa.

Medical staff are trained to look for a variety of things, not just simple jewelery.

As long as it has a caddeceus on it, in a place normal jewelery is found, then they'll see it, and inspect it.
Some of the ones sold by the medic alert company are pretty fancy.
Personally, i have a card in my wallet, and am getting a tattoo on the inside of my wrist.
A stylised caddeceus, with my blood type and Type 1 diabetes written around it.

Anything that suits you, that you will not forget. Doesn't matter how practical it is, if you don't WANT to wear it, then chance are sometimes you won't. Which makes it rather pointless lol.

i have a card in my purse, that i put at the 'clear window' section so it is the first thing you see when you open it. Get some interesting looks at check outs at Tesco though.....

i also have two I C E (in case of emergency) numbers in my phone and they are the first two numbers you see on the contacts list

Dont do jewellry as I'd likely lose it. Or be allergic to it. My immune system doesnt like me very much, hence the pancreatic challenges :lol:

Heres one for you on a similar note. When my son was 8yrs old and had a really bad hypo at school and had ran out of test strips during it, they sent for an ambulance telling them of the situation, ie hypo child needs medical assistance. Imagine the uproar when said ambulance appeared without both bs testing monitor and glucogen (beggars belief) So 1st ambulance had to send for 2nd ambulance with correct kit, thankfully i had arrived and between a teacher and myself we managed to hold him down and get lucozade down him as he'd become very silly! Apparently abulances don't carry diabetic equipement as a rule ( on this occasion even when there told to) and to think how small both pieces are!!
