Levemir & Novorapid complications

Hello,

Just wondered if anyone had any advice really.

I have been a type 1 diabetic for 6 years now. For years i didnt control it at all. Now ive just recently discovered i have become pregnant (unplanned). So have now had to start to do something about my bs'.

My diabetic nurse has taken me off a regime of novomix 30 in the morning, rapid at tea time and levemir at bedtime. She has now put me on to novorapid 3 times a day and 14 units of levemir at bedtime. But i am now finding that my novorapid isnt keeping my blood sugars down during the day as it is only covering what i have eaten.

Does anyone recommend going on to the twice a day levemir?

Or have any advice on the regime that i am on?

Thanks :)

Hi,

A lot of people have trouble Levemir not lasting a 24 hour period, hence why they split the dose, which could be a option for you. It may also be possible that you need to increase the dose slightly by 1-2 units to see if this resolves the problem of increasing bg's between mealtimes. So, if you are sure that you are using the correct amount of novorapid to cover your carbs at each meal, then it certainly is the Levemir.

As you are pregnant, and pregnancy can effect diabetes control sometimes, I would discuss this matter with your diabetes nurse before making any changes, but in the mean time record all your insulin doses, carbs eaten and blood glucose readings so that the nurse can analyse these at the appointment.

Good luck!

Hi vodkashots,

What are your blood sugars like when you wake in the morning?

well on the 30th of march i went to bed on a 11.5 and woke up on a 16.2, on the 31st i went to bed on a 7.7 and woke up on a 14.6. Went to bed last night on a 11.9 and woke up on a 11.0

Thank you nigel.

i think i may have to talk to my nurse about going on to the twice a day levemir as my blood sugar levels are not staying down in between meals.

Hi Hanna,

Looking at your bedtime and morning readings I would definitely say that your Levemir insulin needs adjusted or split. As I say, the best person to speak to regarding this matter is your diabetes nurse, do get back to us to say how you get on.
