why do I get hypo symptoms when my blood sugar is 7.1. I got light headed, Shaky and felt sick. I hade been to a buffet where it was all bread, pastry ( sausage rolls. Quiche etc.) I did not eat any cake. I sometimes get like this without eating a lot of carbs and my automatic reaction is to eat, as before I was diagnosed I would pass out if I felt like this and had not eaten for 3 hours. I have been diagnosed for 12 years but still get the same symptoms. I take 2000 mg of metformin a day.

Are your levels normally above or below that Pat?

It varies depending on what I have eaten. They are normally between 6 and 8 but can be higher

Ok so not a doc but if you're getting the symptoms at around 7 then one explanation is that you went low which made you feel **** then you liver dumped (your liver released glucose) to compensate which raised them back to the value that you measured. This normally happens if you don't eat or exercise strongly but can be caused by your pancreas over producing insulin in response to eating more carbs than usual. Its called reactive hypoglycemia. A good guess if this was the cause would be if the crappiness happenned around an hour after eating. Liver dumps are entirely natural and people normally don't even realise ones happened but sometimes you feel rubbish just before it happens. If it keeps happening then talk to your doc.

May well be unrelated to your bg readings and could be your bp for example, better that you mention these symptoms to your gp and let them investigate the cause.

Agree with noblehead low blood pressure can also cause very similar symptoms.

I also wonder if it might have been a dip in blood pressure, which can happen after eating in healthy people, not just diabetics. It happened to me once a few years ago - I actually fainted for the first time in my entire life. (Hubby thought I'd had a heart attack and when I came round he was trying to resuscitate me. :))
