Lisinipril

Just had my 6 monthly check up and everything seems good - HA1.. of 5.8, weight relatively stable. Nurse was all positive - except my blood pressure - 135/85 if I remember right.

I have been taking atenolol (25) and Istin for years for my blood pressure, and now the nurse has insisted that I move to Lisinipril and stop taking the atenolol - on the basis of protecting my kidneys as a diabetic and lowering BP. I have no kidney issues that I have been told about

Is anyone else on this stuff / experience?

Thanks

Yup...I am on the lisonopril...well, not a the moment as I am pregnant, but usually I am! My fr thinks of it as a bit of a wonder drug in some respects I think. It is good for blood pressure, and he said that if he had his way, he would put all his diabetic patients on it, as it actually protects the kidneys. Your HbA1C is great...so I don't think that they are especially worried about that, but if you have been diabetic for a long time, it is sometimes seen as a safety precaution.
below a quote from one of the drug companies...

Reducing blood pressure and blocking angiotensin II formation with Zestril may be of special benefit in hypertensive patients who suffer from diabetes. This is because ACE inhibition may protect the smallest arteries from damage and this may help to prevent diabetic complications of the eye and kidneys.
Obviously, like any drug, there are side effects. The one I suffer with is that I often have a very slight, dry, tickly cough..but it is not the end of the world.

Completely up to you what you want/don't want to take. Personally, I take it, and like to believe the claims...but I have no proof that they are working, other than my bp is good, and my kidneys have not got any worse, despite 2 pregnancies!
Good luck.

Sugar - Thanks for time to make comments - this make me feel better and much what my DN was saying. I'll always go with the advice I'm given - but sometimes am never sure that they have got it right Cheers

Lowish BP is good at helping protect kidney, eyes and heart. ACE inhibitors also have an added beneficial effect in addition to the lower BP effect. Apart from inducing a cough in some people, ACE inhibitors are well tolerated. Plenty of people can feel tired on Beta Blockers like Atenolol.
