My GP is referring me to a gastroenterologist (I think that is what he said) to look at my liver.

They say I have had raised liver enzymes for quite a while (never mentioned to me despite 6 monthly blood tests) and that it is likely fatty liver disease and there is a high risk I have scarring/fibrosis.



Just got dx of diabetes before xmas. 6 months ago HBA1c was 40.

I have fatty liver and the only answer appears to go on less than 50 grams of carb per day.
Look at Southport GP non alcoholic fatty liver disease on this site, please.
See comments on Reactive Hypoglycemia section regarding N.A.F.L.D. ( I am not suggesting you have R.H. but it may be helpful where NAFLD is mentioned?)
It appears to be due to fructose according to some researchers. Pse don't worry, many diabetics have got this right by diet and they don't drink alcohol.

Yes it would be a gastroenterolgist they are liver experts.

Many, many type 2 diabetics have a non-alcoholic fatty liver.
(And some have an alcoholic fatty liver too )

Professor Taylor of Newcastle Diet fame posits that it is the fatty liver that causes the type 2, and by losing weight (the visceral fat in and around the liver and other organs) it is possible to 'reverse' the type 2 and become symptom free with normal blood glucose.

So, if your T2 is caused by a fatty liver that may be a positive thing. You can follow the diet, de-fattify and maybe have a positive outcome.
 
Diagnosed type 2 Dec 2013. I have struggled with this, currently taking 3 x 500mg a day
lost 9lbs since August 2015 last year after a spell of recurrent urine infection, I was really fed up by this point, eventually saw gp who told me that I had ketones etc in urine and needed to go to hospital as needed insulin. Anyway they took bloods and I provided another sample, bloods came back fine and urine still showed ketones but they just sent me home and said that I had a really bad infection, a fatty liver and did not need insulin! Thankfully not had any further episodes but decided to give meds another try. now and then I still get upset tummy which I keep telly me is IBS

Last HBA1C 62 down to 57 in Dec 2015.

The advice given in the link posted is "lose weight" - I don't think anyone would disagree with this. (I suspect you mean ignore the advice on HOW to lose weight which was given on a different page by following a link.)

yes exactly sorry if I wasn't clear.. especially the fill yourself up with fibre bit..
 
Hi of all the liver blood tests done in my practice 24% (early one in four) come back as abnormal, so you really are not alone.
In my research 68 patients with abnormal liver function went on the low carb diet lost weight and most had greatly improved liver function Perhaps you could get a copy to show your GP and discuss if he thinks it's worth a trial ?

I was also diagnosed with Fatty Liver (NAFLD). Doctors did a scan to confirm. blood tests showed ALT, ALP & GGT were all elevated.
Just 4 months on low carb reduced all my readings by almost 50%.
I am absolutely convinced the issue is resolved.
On holiday for 10 days, i went off low carb. Ordinarily my blood sugar would jump into the 20's. Instead, it remained around 7+.
I did however put on 19 lbs. That suggested to me that my liver was working reasonably well and converting excess sugar into fat.
Low Carb works.

p/s I am back on low carb & lost the weight again around 3 weeks later.
 
Hi letsy. I too have been told I have Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver. I went to my local Hospital a few days ago on 14th January (2016) to see a Doctor and get my blood results. ( not Diabetes related) I was seen by a Specialist Nurse and she said: 'We said we are going to have a talk about my alcohol consumption'!! Luckily my Partner was with me, because I was Shocked! - and my Partner actually said that I hardly ever drink Alcohol, and reeled off that I had a glass of Bailey's to see in the New Year, a glass of red wine on Boxing Day, a glass of red wine on Christmas Day and a glass of a red wine at a Birthday Party on 20th December. (My partner NEVER touches Alcohol) Anyhow, the Nurse then looks in my notes and then turns to me and says: ' Oh, it says here you are Diabetic - Fatty Liver us a complication of Diabetes! And I was told a report would be sent to my GP, so I was to make an appointment (Have got one booked) and I only went to the Hospital to get a blood result on my Ferritin Level (Iron Count) as I am Aneamic. I am going to read the Southport GP Link. Sorry for waffling on!!!
