Local Support - I Would Encourage

Any one to put the feelers out in your local community and find out if there is a local Diabetes UK Support group.

Only diagnosed two weeks ago, but tonight met about 30 lovely diabetics from all walks of life as we had a presentation from a podiatrist.

I have my new diabetic appointment tomorrow, but am feeling positive about what lies ahead and there are people out there that have done it.

Group things aren’t generally my thing, but anything to help my health. Give it go.

I am a Committee Member on my local DUK group. Those attending the group are all very different and have different ways of dealing with their diabetes, but they're a great bunch of people. A bit like here; I get far more from the group and its members than I could ever put in.

I'm really glad you got a lot out of attending your group. Our monthly meeting is tomorrow. I'll be ther. :)

Just being in a room with others who Understand was just great, and I feel so encouraged.

Over my way we have NDSS which is the Aussie version of DUK. They do round country tours with seminars of different themes. Maybe podiatry one time then kidneys the next. Generally they are well attended. I don't go to them now as the themes repeat. The medical info was quite useful. Sadly, they stick rigidly to the NDSS guidelines regarding diet and telling us that 50% of our dietary needs should come from carbohydrates with reduced fat and post meal glucose up to 10 is OK. Still peddling the myth that T2s have no need to test. I tried this when I didn't know any better with disastrous results. Luckily, I stumbled upon this place and have adopted a much lower carbohydrate intake with more fats. The results so far have been remarkable. Generally you will find the groups useful but the data requires filtering. Working out what to filter is the challenge.
Good luck tomorrow.

Ha ha you're right about the filtering. Most don't do low carb, I obviously need to find my own way of what works, but would love to be able to show it makes a difference

All is not lost. The peak scientific body over our way, the CSIRO, a government backed scientific and research organisation have published a book on low carb diets after conducting their own research.

When government bodies don't agree with each other it brings new meaning to the word 'filtering'. Meanwhile we're the guinea pigs.
