Long Day!

This has been such a long day. Erland has developed a stinker of a cold. Blocked nose, bit chesty and just thoroughly grumpy and miserable. He hasn't wanted to eat much and his levels as a result have been all over the place. As high as 20 before lunch (but no ketones) and as low as 3.4 now just before bedtime. Its so difficult to give the right amount of insulin when he's grazing his way through the day.

He's needed so much attention and watching all day and shoot me for saying this, but I have found it so hard. I feel I've neglected my elder son who's 5.

I'm sure tomorrow will be better. I'm just tired and probably hormonal!

Hi Annette, sorry to hear about your long day! It's hard when the little ones are ill as their blood sugars bounce around a bit more and of course they need that extra attention. It can be hard on all the family including you. May be when your little one is better you can set aside some time for your older child, perhaps taking him out to the park or going to the shops just you and him. I'm sure he understands the situation and it's probably you feeling guilty as we all do from time to time.

Don't forget yourself as well. You will need some time off to recharge those batteries. Looking after a diabetic child can be quite demanding at times. We often forget that as a carer we too need a bit of time off and of couse a bit of tlc.

Hope tomorrow is a better day. leggott

Not having enough time. Broken sleep.
I know exactly how you feel. I'm completely shattered with Khaleb being so sick for the last couple of months. He's seeing the Paediatrician on Tuesday so I can hopefully get some answers. Khaleb was 1.9 last night at 12.30am, back up to 11 at 3am and down to 3.9 at 6.30am. The night before was pretty good but the night before that was worse with a 1.5 hypo. Khaleb's been sleeping with me so I can keep an eye on him. He was on huge amounts of insulin and I've cut it right back but still got problems. His cough is awful and 4 courses of antibiotics have done nothing to help. He looks really sickly.

I've been lucky that my other son was away with a school ski trip for the last week but he's back now. He did something to his knee (possible dislocated it) and needs to see a doctor tomorrow and get an xray and had the ambulance to him after he fainted on the way home from the trip.

Sometimes being a Mummy isn't all its cracked up to be.

All the best that Erland gets better really fast!

I'm sorry to hear Erland isn't well, I hope he feels better soon and things go back to normal for you or as normal as things are with diabetic children.

I completely sympathise with you, Lottie has just come down with Chicken Spots as she calls them so we are all over the place too.

Take care and try not to stress too much x

Thanks ladies. Its just good to know I'm not alone. I hope all the little ones get better soon. Erland is a bit better but still very needy.
