Hi all,

I'm going to the states on business and wanted a bit of a advice about background insulin.
I normally take 8 units of lantus at 9pm. When I'm away 9pm will be 4pm.

Since I'm only away for a week, I though it would be a good idea just to carry on injecting at 4pm then I won't have to bother time shifting or anything (esp. since lantus takes 2-3 days to take effect).

Any thoughts?

I'm also due to go to Dubai later on in the year, and there 9pm = 12am. In which case I might just move an hour earlier to have before bed.

Does anyone know if background insulin is affected by the time of day? Does it have more/less effect when asleep/awake?

Thanks,
James

Your plan for going to the US sounds sensible. As long as you inject at 24 hour intervals, my understanding is that it doesn't matter what time of day it's done.

In the past I've done it the other way - accounting for the time difference by pro-rataing extra or less background insulin, but if you're going to be able to inject at 4pm every day, I think your way sounds better.
