Long term effects of consistently high bloods?

Hi, I am type II and have been on Byetta for over a year now, as well as metformin & glipizide (2 tablets twice a day). My sugars were pretty well controlled until I had several infections over the Christmas period at which point my figures went right up. They were going to take me off Byetta and put me on insulin, which worried me to be honest because I use a wheelchair and the possible weight gain side-effects. Anyway of my bloods eventually went back to near normal again so I decided against insulin. However just lately they have gone up into the late teens and early 20s again and I don't know what to do. I asked my diabetes clinician if I could now go on insulin but I can't get an appointment until the July and this has been going on for a couple of months now.
I stopped using the Byetta because it started to give me chills and diarrhoea after injecting and it wasn't making any difference to my blood levels anyway. I've got quite a bit of neuropathy in my left foot now, including the electric shock types, and I generally don't feel great.

Therefore my question is (finally) what are the long-term effects of having high sugar levels? I've started to get a lot of stomach cramps and diarrhoea still, and aches and pains in my joints & glands and wondered if this could be related? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Could be worth looking at your diet to see if any changes make a difference. Do you have your own meter so you can check which foods affect your levels? Hope you get something sorted soon

Long term effects and dont know how long mine was or how high but have just been diagnosed with Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO) and noticed a change to my sight in one eye in the New Year. Saw optician in Feb and she referred me to hospital.
Its taken since then until mid to late May to be seen! My right eye is very bad and left eye just starting and last week started Lucentis treatment first on right eye and this week on left eye. The right eye vision has improved a bit and there will initially be 3 treatments on each eye one evry 4 weeks.

I am sure there are many other long term effects, sadly.

The other thing to consider is whether your bloods have gone high again because of something else being wrong in your body. As you found at Christmas, infections can push up your sugars and so can other health complaints. Joint pains, stomach cramps and diarrhoea could be symptoms of something else, especially if you don't feel well. I'd strongly recommend getting to see your gp to get looked at.

Good luck!
