Hi, I would appreciate some advice. My Mum js 72 and has had type 1 diabetes since she was a child. She uses the carb counting method of insulin and has so far been using a finger prick and an accu-check aviva expert machine to tell her how much novo rapid to take pre-meals. In the last 6-9 Months she has been declining in terms of memory and confusion and has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. This has meant that she often has to prick her finger multiple times and can take her an extended period to calculate her insulin injections. She lives with my step father of about 10 years who is in his early 80s and struggles to help her due to limited understanding. There's limited patience on both sides. The good point is mum is barely alone. About 9 Months ago the NHS signed off a libre machine, but they moved out of the region before it arrived (due to moving closer to family). Care has restarted with a new NHS team but they are slow to act. We also feel that a CGM (and possibly insulin pump) would be a better treatment given that mum is barely literate with her phone and it would give me great peace of mind to have something that can provide constant readings and not need to be waived over the sensor to get a reading. This is some way off on the NHS (at least April).

We are about to order a Dexcom g7 outside of the NHS, however are worried that the insulin calculation will need to be made on a new phone app (as the Aviva expert can only calculate what to take from the blood strip). This means that there will be a need to take the reading from the g7 in the app, to another app manually which could just created a new problem "downstream".

Extra info: I live about 25 mins away, I spend a day a week with them but can't be there all the time, in particular in the mornings when the confusion seems to be at it's peak. We will soon be going on holiday whereby we can all be together for a week to establish and get used to new tech / routines.

Any thoughts / advice / similar experiences and learnings would be really appreciated. A simple, stand-alone insulin calculator might be a solution if anyone can recommend one?

Speak to her GP about domiciliary care, I had it for my dad after my mum died, he was blind and was diagnosed with dementia. The district nurse used to come and do him injections etc, they are also great at keeping a general eye on their health. Your parents can be assessed for a package. I’ve posted a link for you that has some good info in
