Hello my name is vicky. I have just register on here because I have just found out that my dad has got diabetes. I am not to sure what sort he has but the doctor gave him medication for it. I just need to help my dad he is 53 years old and he also has asthma. He like to drink beer and barclay and coke. But i am not to sure wether he should be drinking at all. He isnt a heavy drinker he just likes to have a few cans when he has finished work. But sometimes i think he drinks to much. I am not sure what sort off foods he should be eating. Thats why i have come on here for some help i dont want anything to happen to my dad. Also i was told by someone that if a parent has diabetes its a good chance i would have it. Is this true?
I am not worryed about me just my dad can you please help me. sorry for going on. Thanks

beer and coke have a high sugar content, so he will need to stay away from them. I'm not sure what he could substitute them with though.. ive heard that a glass of red wine may be ok.

At his age, it is most probable that he has type 2. In which case, there is not a great possibility of you having it as it is not genetic. It is most commonly due to lifestyle.

He should try to avoid eating foods like chips, white breads and starchy vegetables (e.g. potatoes). Better choices are: whole grains, beans, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hi Vicky.
I also found out i had type 2 at 54, sepember 07, luckly i am a driver so never drank almost at all, well if i had a few days off maybe.
You must tell your father coke, as my doctor says "Should carry a health warning" full fat coke is almost poison, the ammount of sugar is fantastic. Also tell him dont have diat coke from the pump at a pub you still get whats left in the tube of normal coke, i fell for that one, only have bottled diat drinks.
With food i found tesco`s web site gives a lot of information of food contents like sugar, fats and salt if you look i`m sure you could find other things he can have, tesco do there own diat lemonade which is sugar free, it dont taist bad either.
Just a thought why not talk to your father and tell him you care about him and want to help him, It may be just what he needs to point him in the right direction.

Hi Vicky,

I'm not sure how willing your dad might be to take advice from you, but diabetes isn't just something that's a bit inconvenient - he either changes his ways or he will kill himself. Sorry to be blunt but it really is that simple.

He can drink as much beer and coke as he likes, nobody is going to stop him, and he will have a very short life expectancy. Alternatively he can take the view that he would rather live and do something that will make living a more likely outcome. You will often hear diabetics mention that nothing is off limits, and to an extent that is true. Once you have got your blood sugar level under control, then you can eat or drink what you like, but in small quantities. Something like an occasional beer won't cause too much damage - it will raise blood sugar for a day or so.

If he really can't do without a beer then the only thing that won't cause enormous damage is Pils lager because that has hardly any sugar. All other beers are very high in sugar.
