I take lev emir morning and nite humalog and metformin 500mg now saying that I haven't been taking my metformin for at least 2 yrs!?? Why I don't know??? I am very upset as I am struggling to walk and have to stand at work I have been told I have planta fastiaitis in my heels and nerve damage in my feet x I have been prescribed amitriptyline 10mg but so far havnt taken it as it promotes weight gain!! I know I sound obsessed with my weight lol I am but it's just a vicious circle I don't know what to do?? Please can someone help me understand what's happening as I feel what's the point I'm told to lose weight and the insulin is making me gain heeeelp x thanks Debbie also does anyone think I would benefit from going on one of those course like daphne?? I need re educating lol and how easy is it to get one from the docs????

Hi Debbie and welcome. I'm sure the T1s will have some tips for you to get on track with your diet, insulin and weight loss plans. Plantar fasciitis is treatable with orthotic foot supports and stretching exercises both prescribed by a podiatrist. Amitriptyline can cause weight gain in the doses used to treat depression ie 100-150mg but at 10mg it won't cause too much of a problem in this area. It might help with nerve pain/chronic pain but so can other drugs in the same group, so if this one doesn't help, you might want to try one of the others. Good luck.

My husband was given Amitriptyline for the excruciating pain in his back. Unfortunately he did put on about half a stone but the fact he wasn't dancing could have had something to do with that.

Don't you attend a hospital's diabetic clinic? You could ask the DSN if you could go on a DAFNE course, or they might have their own version of it. My own hospital runs one which is on a Friday and Monday, with the weekend to practise the carb counting.

You could also ask to speak to the clinic's dietician who might be able to help you with your weight, although that is much easier if you can adjust your insulin to the reduced carbs you eat.

Have you been hypo at the same time(s) every day? Obviously if you are able to get rid of the hypos you don't need the extra carbs/calories to treat them.

Hi Debbie, simple solution is to go right back to basics. Test your basal levels first and see where you are with that. Obviously if you are on to much insulin you will hypo then treat the hypo........... more weight gained.
Yes DAFNE would be a good idea or look on line at bdec you need to match your insulin to what you eat. Do you have the books think like a pancreas and using insulin? They come highly recommended and will give you a good insight into managing your diabetes. Books can be found on Amazon :)
