Hi all. Started on the low carb diet in February. Came down from 12 stone 3lbs to 10 stone 7 lbs. Blood glucose down to about 6.0 Mmol/l and hba1c at 48mmol/l. My problem now is that I am still losing weight. I am 6ft 1in tall and stick thin. I cannot afford to lose much more before I can hide behind a lamp post. Any one any suggestions how to maintain weight without eating any carbs, which does spike my bg up to over 8. Tried upping the cheese but even I baulk at much more. Thanks for the forum. Really enjoy reading the threads.

My husband had this problem. He has now stabilised his weight and has an excellent hba1c now but he was lucky and was diagnosed at prediabetic. He eats loads of walnuts and has snacks of livlife bread (3.8 carbs per slice) dipped in loads of olive oil, this is addition to normal low carb meals. And he has two pieces of 90 per cent chocolat a day.

Eat more fat and a little more protein; try one of the low carb nutritional calculators to get recommended percentages of carbs/protein/fat for your personal requirements (e.g.
http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/DietMakeupCalc.php). Fats and oils won't affect your glucose levels but can up your calories, and they're also an essential part of your low carb diet. You can include (more) nuts and nut butters, cheese, butter, cream, full fat yoghurt, oily fish (e.g. salmon, mackerel, trout), fattier meats and poultry, avocados, olives, cook with olive or coconut oil, etc, use nut oils as salad dressings, make your own breads, cakes and muffins with nut flours or ground nuts, and treat yourself to small pieces of plain high percentage (75%+) dark chocolate. And if you're a glutton for punishment, you might try a mug of bullet proof coffee occasionally too!

Fat bombs !!! They are not for everybody but they pack a big calorie punch in a small package. Some are sweet, some are not, there are recipes all over the internet and books devoted to them. A great way of upping your calories without upping your carbs. I am not a coffee drinker so it sounds gross to me but some people add heavy cream, butter, and coconut oil to their morning coffee and then whisk it or use an immersion blender. This is bulletproof coffee and can be like 1000 calories per cup.
