loving the pump

I just got the phone call today to tell me I'll be getting plugged into my pump in two weeks time. I've spent the last while reading through your threads about just starting out on the pump for your son and it's both scary and incredibly informative at the same time so thanks for all your posts.

Gives a good idea of what it's all about, and actually the perspective of a parent is useful as your not clouded by actually having the hypos/ hypers yourself so I feel I just got a great sense of what the next few weeks could hold.

Well, from 12.7 at 5oclock to 5.0 at 8oclock, thats a big drop but she's like that so didn't worry. Went to bed at just after nine and she was 4.1 so gave her half a tablet and left it at that. We know that 1 tablet will bring her up about 2.5 so she should be fine. Didn't test through the night so we will see what she is like when she gets up, I'm expecting around 5.5 ish, will let you know how far out I am later. :wink:
We did a cannula change tonight so that may account for the rapid drop.
I hope Dylan has a good night.

2.5 at 9 gave to glucotabs
5.1 at 10
6.5 at 1
4.7 waking

im pretty chuffed with that again 2.5 not great but he came out of it quick and stayed at a good level so im happy we are def getting there

congrats spideog on ur news, im so glad i have been a help to u it is lots of work but dont be disheartened by a few weeks of bad numbers when it starts to go right u feel elated its def worth the work in my opinion. the hardest bit for me is getting my head around the new procedures for hypo as feels in built to give long acting carbs and always felt nervous just giving fast acting but it does work hope i havent scared u too much tho

We also did a set change last night Great results Anna Marie, so pleased to see that Dylans readings seem to be more settled now. I'm sure it will get even better over the next few weeks

Jess has said since going on the pump she feels much better and has more energy. The staff at her school have noticed a subtle change in her too saying that she seems more focused on her work and less distracted.

Harry, it's so nice to be able to almost predict what the waking reading will be. Pre-pump days for Jess we'd never had a hope of guessing where her reading might be in the morning. Jess also sees a private tutor for an hour and she also gets to eat a biscuit there. Her tutor keeps the packaging from the biscuits so that Jess can read the carb content and deliver insulin with the pump depending on what she's eating. But a good guess for most biscuits is about 9 or 10g carbs.
 
Great news Anna Marie with only a slight blip, things are really looking good now.

Sophia, yes it's nice to know that she will be pretty much OK when she wakes, it is such a relief to have the confidence that we now have. I think that you are right about the carbs per biscuit, Lilys ratio is 1:13 at tea time so we tend to give her 1 unit as she will probably have a jaffa cake and some juice.
When she got up this morning at quarter past 7 her BG was 5.1 so not far out . It has been hard work but we can certainly see a huge difference in her levels.
Spideog, congratulation on the pump date, I'm sure once you have it sorted that you will love it as much as we all seem to do.

just spoke with dylans DSN this morning she is absolutly delighted and said we have taken to this so well
im looking forward to seeing his result at lunch to see if the changes made yesterday will help today his nurse has said its the basal thats making all the difference to how he is doing being able to alter it hourly is whats suiting him so well

i too have noticed a difference in dylan sophia at this early stage, not so much at home but he did taekwondo mon night and remembered his 3 patterns for the first time ever where as before he has needed guidance, and tues he did his best swimming lesson ever and i swear its down to better control and being able to concentrate better generally will wait a bit and ask his teachers if they have noticed any difference there altho he hates school so prob wont make much difference lol :lol:

having seen the difference a pump can make to life i feel everyone should be offered them it so shouldnt be about cost, i know not everyone likes them but to be offered would be nice
