on friday i had a low bg of 3.1 at lunch time i was at work and felt ok while i was working but when i went for my brake i started to shake thats when i got the 3.1 i was not that late in getting my lunch as i offten go at 1.30 -1.50 and on friday i got to go at 1.20 so for a friday that was early. i do not have any say in what time i go as i work on check out in a big supermarket and dinners go in the order of first to go home first to have lunch im last home on a friday so last lunch. i start work at 10 am so to keep me going i have my breakfast at 9.15 just before i set off i always have it at that time on work days . it was very cold in there all last week as the heating had packed up so i put it down to 3 days of been very cold it was only 12c in there and i had not been able to get warm for days .
but today i had my lunch at 11.15 as i was doing the lunch cover i had a ham salad sandwich a banana and packet of crisps and the heating is now working so i was not cold but when i got home at 2.15 i was shaking again i was very hungry so i tested and it was 4.9 i no thats not that low but i seem to find that if it drops below 5 i get the shakes is this normal?
i had the same to eat as i usely do most days i just have the sandwiches and crisps or some fruit not both so i had more to eat to eat today
when i got my meter i was getting readings of 7.5-8.9 that was only 2 weeks ago im now getting readings of 5.1-6.9 i have lost 13lb since i found out 4 weeks ago so put it down to this but thats twice in 5 days i have had the shakes :(

Hi Sami,

I am sure that someone will be able to give you better advice, but the shakes could be your body reacting to being at a lower blood sugar than it is used to being at. This is how it works with T1s (not saying that you are T1, just a similar theory) ie people who tend to have high blood sugar most of the time can feel hypo at higher levels, whereas those who run at low blood sugars, can sometimes lose sensation of hypos a bit, becasue their body is used to running at that level.
I guess the only thing you can do, is have a word with the supermarket, and see how they can accomodate your diabetes...they should make allowances, to allow you to eat regular meals etc. There is something in teh disability discrimination legislaton about this I believe, but hopefully, a word with your supervisor, expalining teh situation might sort it out? Cold can effect your blood sugar too

Hi Sami,

What Sugar describes applies also to type 2s. As you know what the early warning signs of a hypo feel like why not carry a packet of glocose tablets or lucozade tablets in your pocket. If you feel the symptoms coming on then taking one or two will quickly raise your sugar level so you can last out until lunchtime. But don't take loads, just one or two should be enough for the shakes to wear off.

You can feel the hypos symptoms as well when your blood sugar level dramatically drops. Meaning that for example if you quickly go from 13.5 to 7.5 you can have the hypoglycaemia symptoms. Your level is still high but the drop will cause the sweating and shaking etc...At that stage it's not necessary to treat it as a hypo. That's why testing is still and always very important.
TAke care.

As a Type 2 on insulin, I know exactly how you feel. I get the shakes at anything under a 5.00 reading. I also feel sweaty, confused and what I can only describe as "odd".
It is soon rectified if I have something very sweet but when my readings go very low I get quite panicky,as it seems to take a while longer to rectify the problem.I always carry emergency sugar supplies with me now, as there is nothing worse than being in a situation when blood sugars are dropping and you have no easy access to something sweet to have.

Agree completely! There is nothing like sitting in a meeting thinking, wheres my sugar supply, and having to get to it ASAP to make me panic. I try and remeber to take it with me where ever I go, but it always teh times I forget that I need it! The good news is that no one seems to bat an eyelid when I reappear, a few minutes later, with cheeks bulging full of food, hamster style!
