i was diagnosed with type 1 three weeks ago at the age of 69 so still very much a learning curve for me. I take Apidra during the day and Abasaglar at night. My BS has mainly settled during the day but I am waking up with a headache in the morning and low BS so I keep reducing my night time dose. Does anyone else have this problem?
Hi
@Jilly Poll , welcome.
Finding the right dose takes time because the only way to find the correct dose is by trial and error, and adjusting doses based on blood glucose.
The amount you need can also vary, especially in the beginning because often our pancreas still produces some insulin unpredictably, the 'honeymoon period'. Some people may find they need very little insulin for a while during this time.
So it sounds like you're doing all the right things by adjusting your doses!
If you wake up with a headache, can it be you are going low during sleep as well? Do you use a sensor or sometimes set an alarm to do an occasional test a couple of hours before you wake up?
You could also consider having a talk with your diabetes nurse on the timing of your Abasaglar. It has a bit of a peak action a couple of hours after injecting, and it tapers down in the last hours before injecting. So maybe it would suit you better to take your long acting in the morning instead of before bed.
