Low Carb Breakfast and Milk at Bed

Morning

Having taken the step of writing everything down that I eat and how much insulin I take during my new carb counting regime I seem to find that my blood sugar level seems highest at around 10.30am during weekdays. I am waking up with good BS readings between 4 - 7mmol having found 16oml of semi skimmed before bed either cold or as a milky drink has brought my morning readings right down. However I have very little time for breakfast in a morning, and generally not a fan of eating at that time so I generally grab a cereal bar at work about 9am, in this time from getting up I can find my BS have raised 3-4mmol. I take enought insulin to cover the carbs (2units:10g) in the bar and correction but by 10.30 my BS is around 12mmol!! i know novorapid can take 4-5 hours to process. again if I dont eat it still increases quite rapidly!!

I have recently on a weekend tried eating no carb breakys such as eggs and bacon and that seemed to work really well, I had no high readings at all that day.

Does anyone else really struggle with carbs in a morning? I think I am going to try go carb free in the morning, but am worrying about eating too many eggs as apparently the doc is now questioning my cholestrol level  anyone have any good suggestions for breakfast that I can make/eat quickly/on the go?

Does anyone else find that milk before bed helps their levels too? I can't believe that something so simple would help...but it does for me

Can't help much as I'm not on insulin, but I read an article recently that said the recommendation on eating fewer eggs has been removed as it's been shown they have no effect on cholesterol. I eat lots more since diagnosis, and my cholesterol has gone down significantly with no change in statin levels! I'm not suggesting the eggs have lowered it, my reduced carb diet probably did that, but they certainly haven't been hindering it.

I am sure the restriction on eggs was lifted some time back by the FSA and 1 or 2 eggs a day are perfectly safe, that said not knowing why your gp is ''questioning'' your cholesterol I would seek his/her advice first before consuming too many eggs.

I personally don't have any problems with carbs on a morning but many people do, for a 40g bowl of porridge I inject 5 units of novorapid... a breakfast of eggs and bacon I need 4 units of novorapid so I do have the choice to eat carbs or not.

The milk before bed I don't do but if it helps with your bg levels then so be it, it might just be that if you are needing carbs before bed that your basal insulin is too high and may need reduced slightly...... but if you are happy with your night-time drink then continue as normal! :)

thank you, I didnt know about the egg restriction being lifted, I always thought it was 1-2 a week that was recommended.

I was taking 26 units before of my lantus, but was told to increase it by 1 unit to 27. It's going to take a bit more experimenting methinks :D

Hi S
If you are sure your Bolus to carb ratio is right, it looks like it is probably the wrong choice of food for you at that time of the day. Cereal bars are usually very high in sugar and low in fat so are in essence a fast acting glucose.
The cereal bar will be kicking in quick before your insulin does and raising your BG rapidly ,this is staying high and along with other hormones on a morning is keeping you high. A lot of us have a higher insulin to carb ratio on a morning because of the Liver dump and Cortisol rise to get us going for the day....let alone the Adrenalin to get us through the rush hour to get into work  These all raise blood sugar.

Maybe change your morning ratio's if you still want to carry on with the cereal bar...I low carb and find mixed berries and cream is a good breakfast to keep me stable on a morning ,but why not have some porridge with half cream half milk...this may keep you on a steadier profile. Granola with no added sugar is good.

What about fruit and a yoghurt ,higher carb than cream but an option.

Just a few ideas, if you fancy low carb on a weekday and don't have the time for the grill or frying pan, how about hard boiled egg with some good quality ham...continental styley :)

You will just have to experiment a bit more...all the best and I hope you find a solution.

Thanks Fallenstar I like the idea of making the hard boiled eggs the night before, I dont know why I didnt think of that!! I know the cereal bars are bad

My intention this morning was to get up early, I set the alarm early enough to make my low carb breaky. it went off and could I for the life of me get out of bed...no! checked my sugars and BAH! 11mmol, assuming body had done the liver dump grrrrr. Really angry at myself today as I was doing so well but hey ho get it down and start again at lunch.

Think I might need to work on my lantus units a little more, slowly but surely getting there :D
