Macrophages are a specialised type of white blood cell.The name literally means 'big eater' and they go round the body engulfing broken down/worn-out cells but also play a part in immunity principally by 'eating' invading bacteria.
Dr. Fung makes a really interesting point that resonates with me when he speaks of ICU patients with acute infections being 'force fed' by gastric tube. The body naturally downgrades appetite during these episodes and the old adage of 'Feed a cold, starve a fever' leapt into my mind. Sometimes, just sometimes, the old wives tales turn out to be true.
