Cold weather, angry people, queues,
My blood sugars have probably always been like this but going on to Libre has highlighted my problem , like many have said they suffer from DP and I certainly do , it shows that my bg is ok up until about 4 am and then shoots up to maybe 12 when I wake at at 6 am I would then give myself extra Nova Rapid to bring it down and end up going low later on , I've now found it happens at lunch time as well when I have a low carb snack and a bg well within range usually about the 6 mark and it shoots up within minutes to maybe 12 , it has just happened I had about 20 carbs of bread I started with a bg of 6.4 and half an hour later it's 11.6 and is still rising , if I was finger pricking I would probably not do a test until I got home from work 4 hours later when it would have come down again , do others suffer from these spikes ? It is something I would never have known was happening without the Libre and wonder if I should just leave it alone as it's probably been like it for years .

The TCOYD.org website has some interesting videos you may find relevant. To watch videos on spiking after meals you would follow the links to the Video vault, then type 1, then the icon for section titled “ Insulin, MDI and dosing.” Hope that helps.

It's normal to get a rise in bg after eating carbs, but there are ways to reduce the rise/duration of the rise.

I always give insulin for carbs (apart from correcting a hypo, or to prevent one). Personally I wouldn't consider 20g of bread a low carb snack, but we all differ. If your bloods are back in range before tea without any insulin it suggests your basal insulin is too high. I'd start by doing a basal rate test to check this, and then go on to check insulin/carb ratio for food.

Edited to add. Libre often reads higher than a finger prick test if bloods are over 10 and lower than a finger prick test if bloods are under 4, so it's worth checking with a finger prick test. My experience was that Libre also took longer to correspond to blood tests after a hypo or higher than 10 reading.
