Hi all, has anyone struggled to stay on a low carb diet? I have been diabetic for about 10 years and am currently taking 2000mg metformin and 5mg saxagliptin My blood sugars are about 11 first thing in the morning which is not good.

Every time I try and go low carb, I only last a few days, then I binge on anything that has carbs in for a few days until I come to my senses and start again. Anything could set me off it could be a bit of stress, wanting chips, pizza etc or simply bored of thinking what to eat. I'm getting really down about the whole thing. Wondering wether to just except more medication as my blood sugars are not good. Any advice greatly appreciated.

That's called the low carb flu. It can take up to two weeks of perseverance. Giving in to carbs just takes you back to square one. Your body is changing from a carb burner to a fat burner

Is there anything low carb you like so you can binge on that rather than chips or the like?
Peanut butter (unsweetened) or cream for example.

@meJulie, I thought I was the only one who felt like that! Everyone on hear seems to find it so easy to low carb. I really struggle with the willpower and perseverance. Two weeks is a long time. Two days would be easier I'm interested to see what ideas people out there have to overcome it......I think I've tried them all. But rest assured Julie you are not alone!

Diabetes is a marathon not a sprint. If you can do the right things most of the time you are doing OK. Life is for living after all. As for the answers well I'm only just finding my own way. You'll figure it out

Jo123 peanut butter and cream I like, maybe I can make something sweet to have available, just don't know how people do it, maybe I'm just weak lol. Chocoholicnomore hope you find some answers too. Here's hoping

While making the switch some people find addition salt helps with it.

Do you like avocado/ guacamole? Eat with celery. Cheese and lunch meat? Nuts? Veggies and dip? Be sure to add enough fat when replacing carbs. More satisfying too.
Once your bs comes down you will feel much better. And seeing lower numbers is inspiring. Good news is it doesn't take long too those numbers drop. Maybe eventually you'll be able to reduce meds. Another incentive.

When you say 'going low carb' what does that mean for you?

We all have different ideas about what it means, rather like we all had different ideas about what was a 'healthy diet' before the Big D struck.

My tips for getting through Low Carb Flu are really quite simple:

Drink more than you think you need.
Drink broth, add salt to food.
Never go hungry. If you need to lose weight, don't even TRY that until you are adjusted to low carbing
Always carry low carb snacks (cheese, nuts, 70% choc, cream for your coffee)
At the slightest hint of a carb craving eat something deliciously decadently rich - the fat kills the cravings - so drink coffee with cream, have those snacks, eat plenty of mayo on your salad, or butter on your veg.
Get enough sleep
and for heavens sake don't do something stressful like giving up coffee, or cigarettes at the same time.
- basically, be kind to yourself and don't go hungry.

Hope that helps.

This really helps, I was trying to use carbs just for vegetables, milk in tea and berries and yogurt for breakfast that's it. l am conscious

For me I was so shaken by my diagnosis, I flipped my psychological switch and decided my life has to change forever, or I've had it;)

Extreme I know and perhaps rare, but I'm grateful that on this occasion selective self discipline has not been too difficult.

I use just veggies and some nuts as carbs, always under 20. I don't limit fats, I eat until satisfied. Avocado is very filling and good for you. I eat it all day long. With all meals and a scoop for snacks.

I think you do need to be kind to yourself. There are plenty of very tasty fatty foods. Switching to fat burning will create cravings as it is your fuel source right now. The body needs some time to adjust and switch but as I said, once you give it carbs it's like starting over. Set your mind and push through. Once it's over you will feel so much better. Energy, clarity, sleep etc.

Best wishes
