Low carb diet

Hi everyone
I’m interested to know if, since using devices such as free style libre sensors, whether you have changed your diet to lower carb and if you are supported in this by your diabetes team. Thanks.

Hi @Browning , I've used the Freestyle Libre for 7 years, and have had diabetes for 7 and a half years.
I started lowish carb pretty much right away after my (initially T2) diagnosis.

It was only two years later that I was rediagnosed as a T1 and moved from being treated by a practice nurse to a 'diabetes team'.
The diabetes nurse in the team can get a bit panicky with my normal hba1c, but my endo is perfectly fine with it.

In my country, a letter is sent to the GP after every specialist visit and patients can see the letter online. A couple of years ago the endo remarked in this letter that my lipids levels had gone from bad to perfect on a LCHF diet and added 3 exclamation marks so she must be happy with it.
The letter also states every year that my hbac1 is fine being this low because it isn't the result of many lows but of stable BG.
So it looks like my endo is perfectly fine with my chosen way of eating.

That’s really interesting, thank you.

Hi
I have only tweaked my diet slightly since using the fab u lous libre about 5 years ago.
I often refuse food though if my levels are where i want them to be.

Eg if i'm out shopping and check my phone and its 5.5 with no fast acting insulin on board i will decline lunch.
A stable sugar level is more important than a cheese sandwich!

However however i do an awful lot more walking as when you see the effect a stroll has on your levels and ive even changed my job so i can walk to work.

Just an alternative way of looking at things in a bingy bongy upbeat way....i'm not one for arguing so i don't see a specialist or DSN.

Sort of ended up on low carb (when on MDI and pumping) as it was easier to get my levels right on lower carbs (been playing at being a T1 for 50 years)

Now on a FCL and while I don't throw massive carb hits at my loop very often - never developed a sweet tooth as wasn't allowed to eat sugary stuff as a kid due to the insulins available at the time

I do need to announce carbs for chips/pizza/pasta) - otherwise I eat normally and 'do nothing' - <deep joy>
