Hello,

I wonder if i can get a bit of help. i was diagnosed with diabetes in Nov of last year. Leading up to christmas readings were okay (average of 7.8 there or thereabouts). Had a very naughty christmas and have struggled every since to get levels back down.

I am type 1 taking levmir and novarapid. I am always hungary and my most indulgent snack is a bowl of special k, usually at night just before bed. I am getting very frustrated my levels are normally around 10 to 15. Can someone tell me abit more about low carb diet to see if this is the key.

It would not be so bad but, i love love love chocolate and no longer have it and the readings are still high.

ta very much

hya jackie,
as for the bloods going higher , u may have now gone through what is called the honeymoon period so see your health care provider as u may need to up your insulins, do u test before and after a meal?
if so what are you eating and what is your readings? low carb is just a matter of cutting down on pasta/rice/potatoes/bread with each meal, get yourself a carb counting book, collins do a great little book for a couple of pounds- this will show u roughly what carbs are in what as there are carbs in more foods than you probably know, then just cut down slowly,
please remember as a type 1 if u lower carbs u will need to bolus less with a meal, have u done a carb counting course? see your diabetic nurse to see if you are out of the honeymooning and let us know what happens :D

There is an online carb counting course at "B-DEC" (google it)

and a comprehensive course for diabetics at www.dsolve.com

At totsy says, you simply cut down on sweets, starches, pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, and fruit juice. The challenge for you is the insulin adjustment that goes along with this so you can avoid hypos. This is why you are best to read around the subject and then do a planned reduction with the help of your doctor.
