Has anyone been on a low carb diet and how many carbs do you have each day, my mother who is 83 has been diagnosed type 2 3 months ago and is having trouble keeping sugar levels below 10 I am type 1 for 26 years (well I am in remission due to panceas transplant) and I would like confirmation about low carb diet like weight watchers etc :D

Hi, there are many diabetics who find a reduced carb diet helpful in controlling their diabetes. Do have a look at the Low Carb forum as there is a wealth of information there. If you have any questions just ask as there are lots low carbers who will be happy to share the benefit of their experience.

PS. Low carbing is very effective but doesn't suit everyone so do do some research before you and your mum decide on which diet is right for her given her age and any other medical issues she may have.

Best wishes

Hi,
I have been low carbing for over 3 months now, I usually eat between 30 and 60 grams of carbs a day, it would be a good idea to buy a copy of Collins Little Gem Carbohydrate counter, it if full of carbohydrate values of most foods, it also contains the other nutritional information for food i.e. fat, protein etc.
Low carb diet is not for everyone, it does take a little getting used to, try your mom on reduced carbs and see what foods she can tolerate, it is also a good idea to check her BG before and after meals to see which foods effect her blood sugar.

Good luck, if you need help this is the place to look for it.

There is a posting in the Low Carb forum which is a Newbies Guide, it is an excellent place to start.

Bernie :) :)
