Low carb high bgs

Hi everyone,

I've been low carbing now for 8 weeks but have done it before (fallen off the wagon) with great success in weight loss. I started off very well and my BGs came down really quickly as expected. Just recently, for about a week, I've been getting much higher readings than expected and this is worrying. For instance, at the weekend I made myself a breakfast of grilled bacon, poached eggs, rocket and a grilled tomato. My waking BG was 4.2 so I didn't take any fast acting insulin, just my usual morning shot of 12 units of Lantus. By mid morning my BG was 14.6! and I had a hell of a job getting it down all day. Since then it's been consistently higher than I would expect, although not as high as 14. On waking it is normally around 3-4 which is on the low side but by lunchtime it has climbed to 8 or 9 even though I am having barely any carbs and injecting for what I'm having plus extra. It is getting me down. Does anyone have any ideas? I've changed my insulin pens and cartridges and I'm pretty sure it's not my meter.

:(

I would be the same, you need to inject insulin even for low-carb meals.

Waking in the 3's is too low, likely you are experiencing a liver dump upon waking which would be your bodies natural response. On MDI I would have to split-dose for low-carb meals like bacon & eggs/omelettes otherwise the fat/protein content of the meal would cause a delayed bg spike. Maybe worth trying to see if it helps matters.

I would certainly need to bolus for bacon and eggs. I personally eat vlc so I gluconeogenisis very quickly especially in the morning. If I don't eat I rise too so I bolus BF right as I start eating but I mostly eat fat for BF as I can't handle any carbs other than a piece of lettuce. I add a small piece of turkey with mustard and mayo. Protein can raise you too. I am very IR in the morning and wouldn't think of not bolusing. The bolus generally covers the small meal and the morning natural rise. It's tricky in the morning.
