i see lots if people being on a low carb diet which i think is a good diet to follow and sucessful in losing weight too. however with all this cheese and meat surely cholestrol levels would be sky high. hope im wrong and if so why?????. im trying to get my daughter to reduce her carbs so any advise for a mum to a 12 year old xxx

Re: low carb high cholestrol ??????

Interesting one this. I reduced my carbs and increased my intake of cheese, eggs etc. my cholesterol went DOWN from 5.5 (where it had been for years) to 3.8 at my last test! Can only assume that I'm either generally fitter OR the arguments that fat doesn't cause high cholesterol must be true! Perhaps a bit of each? Certainly tells me not to be too worried about a few fats (I don't deliberately eat loads of fat)

This previous thread is worth a read.

there are a lot of myths about cholesterol. A low carb diet seems to raise HDL (so-called 'good' cholesterol.)
An important figure is not so much the total cholesterol, as the ratio of HDL to total.

I've been low carbing for two months now, and my cholesterol has dropped a little, from 5.9 to 5.7. I was hoping it would drop more, but I'm impressed it hasn't gone up. I'm having sausages for breakfast (pure meat ones), cheese salad for lunch, lots of mayo, some cream - basically low carb high fat. I've lost about 10lbs all off my middle too.

Sadly for me it has not lowered my cholesterol enough, so I am now going on a statin. But I believe that low carb diets are certainly not bad for cholesterol - and who knows how much more my cholesterol would have come down on low carb diet alone if i was not taking a statin.
