Low Carb / Insulin Pump.

Just interested to know of anyone who follows a low carb regime whilst using a pump. I have adopted the low carb approach for several months now - max 50g carbs per day- and have had great success - although there has been in the odd lapse here and there. I am currently on Basal/Bolus regime using Levermir twice daily and a combination of NovoRapid & Humulin S.

I completed the Dafne course in the summer and have now been informed by my diabetic nurse that if I wanted one she would happily recommend me for pump therapy. As I have made excellent progress since following low carb regime I am reluctant to change anything if it is merely just for the sake of it.

I suppose what I would really like to know is if anyone has experience of the usual Basal/Bolus regime versus the pump whilst on Low Carb - and what their experience has been - ie. improved control/lifestyle etc.

Many thanks in advance to all who may answer.

Hi..

I have been using pump for just over a year. And its the best thing to happen to me, as I have lost a stone in weight and am having less than two thirds of the insulin that I was having before.

Before pumping I was having up to 350g of carbs daily :? After reading this website I decided to reduce my carbs.
I have reduced down to about 90g of carbs a day so am not exactly low carb...but lower carb definitely. I don't eat potato, rice, pasta, pastry or much bread which are all the things which caused me problems before. And I don't miss them!!
I am sure there are pumpers out there who eat even less carbs than me. I can miss out meals quite easily now if I want to. I have also given up eating everything low fat and am sure being female and 50+ that this is better for me.

Some people seem to manage to eat pizza using the square or dual wave bolus function but I can't make it work for me. Which is a pity as I like pizza :(

So go for it.. You will not regret it.
