LOW CARB QUESTION, FLUCTUATING BG!!!

Hello,

Having passed out and had a seizure a few weeks ago due to hypo, I am finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a good BG (partly I guess because I am a little frightened still of my insulin and maybe not taking as much as I should).
However, I am struggling to understand the term low GI and the effect it is having on my levels.
Before lunch today, my reading was around 13. As I only eat a (very generous) salad with a chicken breast, I gave myself 2 units of novorapid, just to bring BG down.
However 2 hours later BG was 3.5.
Nurse has told me I must have some carbs with my lunch to accomodate the insulin - so I put it to her that, as my salad has little or no carbs, why should I have insulin at all with my lunch?
She says that as I am having almost no carbs, my liver may be shooting out sugars, which then raise by BS towards the end of the day. Is this possible? I am totally confused - if there is no carb in a meal, why do I have to take my novorapid?
Also...very confusingly, a few hours after my evening meal last night, BG was 13. I only drank some sugar free pop before bed, yet I took BG before bed and it was 17!!!
I then checked on waking - BS 7.0 (I took some insulin before bed). I then drank one small white coffee (no sugar), and 2 hours later BG was 9??? I really need some advice!
Thanks!

Hope there's someone out there who can help. Have you searched in Bernstein?

There’s seems to be a lot going on with your control, so might be difficult to see the woods through the tree’s

A couple of questions..

Your Lantus injection, do you inject this at the same time every night?

If you were to fast what do you think would happen to your BG levels?

If you Lantus is correct, then in theory you should be able to fast with a +/- of around 2mmol/l of your starting point…

Do you have hypos more in the afternoon or the morning, as the could be a possibility that splitting the Lantus into two timed injection a day, morning and night might give you better ability to cover your back ground needs..

Are you sure that the ratio is correct for your novorapid to carb ratio? As you might need different ratio for different times of the day…

If I had been in your position with similar levels, I would have corrected my BG, but by what you saying perhaps for correction purposed a 1 unit-10g of carbs might set to high, as in theory on average 1 unit of act acting insulin would be expected to drop your BG by 3mmol/l, so in your case should have brought you down to a nice bg level so you might need less insulin to correct a high reading…

This lot might take time for you to get to the bottom of where the main problems are being caused, but have a think and reflection of some of the things said, ask the about the parts that you don’t understand or what more information.. And we try to help you work through it…
