Hi all my 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 back in Feb, we think she is still in the honeymoon period as she is only on low units of novorapid 2 units being the max, what I want to know is can anyone advise on some low carb snacks that she can have without insulin especially when out and about. Also is anything less than 10g carb classed as low carb and no insulin is needed,Thanks

Hi @bnoswad and welcome to the forums.

I might get away with 10g, I would think that a 4 yr old would struggle. Only way to be sure is test, probably on a lower carb intake to start with.

Have you thought about hard boiled eggs for snacking? Possibly berries? Cheese, like baby bels etc?

Dark chocolate that's over 70/80% cocoa is good for a treat. But the taste might be a little bitter for a young person.

Thanks for your reply she is a bit fussy out of the carb free stuff she likes cucumber carrot peperami and peanuts but a bit difficult to carry about on a warm day we was told by diabetic nurse not to eat any fruit in between meals

Fruit can be difficult, pears, apples, bananas, grapes etc have a fair bit of natural sugars in them. Berries are usually not too bad but obviously stick to your dsn's advice.

Thanks for your advice

If you haven't already found it, there's a forum lower down the front page for parents.

You might get some good advice from others in the same position as yourself.

Snack ideas:
  • Any mixed salads
  • Cheese sticks or cottage cheese
  • Unsalted nuts
  • Egg
  • Turkey or Ham Lettuce Wraps
  • Cucumber, carrot, bell pepper or celery sticks with cream cheese dipping
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Sugar-free Ice Pops
  • Shrimps avocado salad
Personal favourites, though contain a bit of carb that may need counter insulin if eating many:
  • Popcorn
  • Rye crisp with tuna salad

What is the daily carb intake in grams?
That will help to consider if 10g carb can be considered low-carb. In principle you can say that eating any carb food would need to be countered with insulin.

Her highest insulin unit is 2 think we are still in honeymoon period daily intake is roughly about 25g breakfast 45g dinner and about 60g teatime so about 130g per day
