Hi Everyone,

I am trying to go low carb, but I am really missing bread - I do test and know that any flour based products, such as bread, pastry, cakes are all giving me high blood sugar readings and so I have been avoiding them as much as possible - so far only had pastry a couple of times in last 6 months, no cake at all but bread I am really missing, I have tried the wholemeal as suggested by Diabetic Nurse and it pushes up my levels by 4 points even just one small slice. I have tried in store baked granary but again same thing happens............. I have looked at recipes for other non wheat flour based breads but I am not able to find where to purchase 'Almond' flour or any of the others locally - so not been able to try them out.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I still am unable to keep my Blood Sugars in single figures - finding it very frustrating - weight has hit a plateau - but life is getting in the way, got very ill parent so stress levels are high which I understand makes losing weight more difficult.

Anyway any help would be much appreciated.

Can you give us an idea of what things you eat in a typical day for breakfast, lunch and dinner? What is your fasting blood glucose typically like?

Have a search through the forum for posts on low carb bread, as there are some brands that might be suitable. You can also make your own low carb bread using various low carb type flours - e.g. coconut, sesame, milled flax seed, ground almonds, etc. There's also a bread mix from Sukrin that just needs liquid adding before you cook it, but it's quite expensive! Almond flour is essentially a finer ground version of the readily available ground almonds.

Livlife bread from waitrose is just 3.8 gms of carbs per slice.
However when I first was diagnosed as pre diabetic I went cold turkey with anything that increased my blood sugar, I do think it is easier to do it like that and get rid of the cravings once and for all. Then once it was down i then tried reintroducing things and testing. And I could go into double figures with for example chilli con carne, no rice just a few kidney beans and I was only pre diabetic.
Also going hard core with cutting out anything that raised my blood sugar which turned out to be carbs, meant the weight fell off me and I had a normal bmi.

The problem with grain, because it is addictive it will give you all sorts of reasons as to why you have to have it. I haven't come across one friendly grain. Until I let go of the excuses of why I couldn't live without it, my glucose levels were not going to improve.

I order all my Almond flour, coconut flour, flax meal, Kelp Noodles on-line. Waitrose sell Spaghetti squash. Where there is a will there is a way ;) As Robbity said, some great recipes knocking around the forum. Good luck
