Low Carbing in East Africa

Hello everybody...

I was diagnosed DT2 back in November with BG's of 14.7.

I immediately went into research mode and am so thankful to have found Diabetes.co.uk forums.

Having read of so many incidents of conflicting advice that had been given by so called professionals, I became, like so many other who have found their way here, somewhat confused. However, having researched the Low Carb diet, I felt that this was the way that I was going to control diabetes, rather than it controlling me.

Before I go into my main point, I wonder if anyone can answer this question. Why are my BG's higher in the morning, before breakfast, than when tested two hours following a low carb meal (6pm) and when going to bed? I would have thought that following something like a 14 hour fast, the opposite would have been true.

My main point is that I have been here in East Africa for a couple of weeks, and despite finding it difficult to maintain a low carb diet per se, due to the fact that most of the food here contains high levels of carbs, I have managed through luck, more than judgement, to keep my carb intake at an acceptably low level.

What has surprised me is that within a few days of leaving the lifestyle that I had in the UK, I found that my BG's were getting progressively lower.

Since starting low carbing during mid-December, I saw a steady drop in my BG's... my fast test, which was 14.7 in November, was down to an average of 6.8 by the beginning of January. By the middle of January, my average was down to 5.5.

I was happy with this, especially as I had also lost 6Kgs during the same time period. However, within a week of being over here, I noticed that I was getting frequent sub 5.0 readings. In fact this last week, my fasting BG's have ranged from 4.4 to 5.2.

As far as I am aware, a person without diabetes has BG's within the range of 5.0 and 6.5, so although I am happy to see my BGs reduced considerably, as I am going to be over here till the end of March, is it safe to maintain a regime that will keep my fasting BG's at these levels?

Any advice as to which would be the best low carb options here in East Africa, other than the obvious meat and fish (you can only eat so much Goat stew) would lso be most appreciated.

David
