Since I moved to Addis Ababa for work last August, I have been absent from this site and have unfortunately slipped off the LCHF wagon. I stopped testing BS levels, resorted to eating a lot of bread, and meals out usually include pizza (which are really good here!
) or chips. I managed to convince myself that being in another country meant that I wasn't diabetic
However, last week I decided that I really must get a grip again and tested bloods after dinner. Shocked to find it up at 16!! So back on it now. It isn't easy to do LCHF - for a country with so many cows, goats and sheep, the availability of dairy products is shockingly poor; things like almond or coconut flour don't exist; and nuts cost the equivalent of £10 for a very small pack - things like avocado and eggs are plentiful. Back on my Pinterest boards to rediscover what I used to cook in the UK, lots of which I can still do here, it just takes a bit more effort to find the ingredients. I will be doing a bit of experimenting with teff flour to see if I can tolerate small quantities. Looking forward to reconnecting with all in the forum community and for you to keep me on the straight and narrow!
Interestingly, the health care professionals I have seen here (private clinic) have been very clued up on diabetes. I have been offered consultations with specialists to discuss diet, hba1c tests and no problem being prescribed Metformin (which I keep forgetting to take
