Hi, I've been doing low carbing for a while now just found out I am pregnant and the midwife told me I must stop as if I have ketones in my blood this can be harmful to the baby. Yet high blood sugars are harm ful too!

Does anyone know if you can low carb whilst pregant? And if so how low can you safely go?

Thanks

With respect anticarb, I don't think this is the place to be asking such an important question such as this, no one on this forum is qualified or in a position to answer, so I would speak with your gp, midwife and dietitian to discuss your present diet and make sure it is appropriate and healthy for both you and your baby.

Congratulations and hope all goes well with your pregnancy! :D

As a Dietitian I agree that you need to speak to your team. low carbing often means a low calorie, calcium, vit intake and so you need to see a specialist dietitian ASAP

Thanks guys I am going to up my carbs slightly but stick to low carb principles and pee on a ketostick every morning to make sure I'm not in ketosis. It seems that I'm having to balance between not having high blood sugars after meals (pregnancy bg ranges very low - can't go above 7.8 after meals) and not going into ketosis, so it's a difficult balancing act but I am getting good care from the antenatal team hopefully the baby will be just fine x
