Low/non alcoholic beers

I have type 1 diabetes recently diagnosed, and noticed in a pack of information given to me that included the dire warnings about too much alcohol, was a caution about drinking low/non alcohol beers as they have a higher sugar content than regular beers.

Before my diabetes diagnosis I used to enjoy Becks and St Pauli non-alcohol beers, even though I drank other alcoholic beverages. Does anyone know whether these low/non alcoholic beers are indeed of a higher sugar content than most alcoholic beers.

Hi Tomas,

Welcome to the forum. :D

Since my diagnosis on 1st January this year I've made a conscious effort not to drink beer or lager anymore; although I have had the odd pint of Guinness.

From what I've read safer drinks for diabetes sufferers are red wine (good for the heart and keeping your BG down), whisky and vodka. These are therefore now my drinks of choice.

When they were one of the few countries with a zero alcohol for driving law. The Czechs, a great beer brewing nation, had some zero alcohol beers which were very tasty and since they like bitter beers, probably low sugar too. It might be worth trying to track this stuff down.

I've just Googles beers for diabetics and came across a blog article which lists 100 different beers and their carb contents. Hopefully the moderators will not object to, or remove this link:

battlediabetes.com/beer-and-diabetes/

For clarity, I have nothing to do with the other website and that is NOT a picture of me at the top right hand corner of the link article............

Ardbeg.
The link to the blog seems to be useful to members therefore it can remain but not as a clickable link.

However for future reference any links to blogs or other forums should be posted in 'Other Forum's and Blogs' in the Sticky Threads. You then post a link to that post here. That is the system.

Hi Ardbeg
A mouth -watering name ! And one of my favourite tipples. At least before I was diagnosed last February.
I followed your link and found that apart from some Lowenbrow they were American 'beers';to be avoided if not only for diabetes sake. But it made me wonder how real ale stacks up in the carb stakes, like the odd Black Sheep, maybe ?
