Hi everyone,

I hope this isn't too random! I am a type 1 diabetic and decided to go on a vegan diet to help me become healthier and lose some weight. I have been vegan for 2 months now.

I *adore* the diet and have never felt better - I can recommend it to anyone out there! My only problem is I find a lot of vegan products, especially dairy alternatives, are very high in sugar. For example, my favourite 0% fat plain greek yogurt is being replaced with Alpro Plain dairy free which is high in sugar - making breakfast less healthy for the diabetes and it's not helping to shift the weight!

I also enjoy deserts but can't find anything vegan that isn't laden with sugar in some form, apart from (some) fruit.

Can anyone recommend anything to help? A recipe you love, a product you've found that solves this problem? Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated. Will happily swap for an amazing avocado pesto recipe if you're interested!!

Many thanks, Natalie

Alpro yogurts you can get one which is just 10 carbs in 100 mg which is just about right or me my dietiten tells me....I have been veggie all my life....vegan at times...
I have no problems with soya products but each to our own choice....loving almond breeze milk very vegan....
It is not easy finding these products but so much more choice now than there used to be....I eat Edam cheese a veggie one....not keen on vegan cheese...holland and Barrett do vegan cheese....tofu is good very vegan. I am sure you know all of this hope I am not insulting your knowledge....just sharing a bit good luck with finding products kat

Hi Natalie,

I find it very difficult to low carb and be veggie/vegan at the same time. I tried altering my porridge a few months back, instead of having 60g of porridge made with semi skimmed, and a Weight Watchers yoghurt to follow which totals 57.5g of carb and 18.4g of sugar I made 30g of porridge with 30g of ground nuts, less milk needed because the nuts don't absorb it plus the yoghurt I had a breakfast of 42g carb but 19.25g of sugar. I find the WW yoghurts to be nearly as low as the full fat Grrek style yoghurts others recommend, but with one heck of a lot more flavour. I have loads of veggie/vegan recipes that I eat all the time, I never use eggs and I don't think any of them use milk, which I do drink so I'm not quite vegan. Not many of my recipes, which I only copied from books etc are particularly low in sugar. I have only recently earmarked my dieabetic veggie cook book for the charity shop as it uses heaps of high carb foods as recommended a few short years ago. I have been following a thread where SamJB suggests the book by a Dr. Bernstein called The Diabetics Diet. I have seen it on the WH Smith website at £12.15 I haven't seen the book yet so I don't know if it has any recipes suitable for us. I hope to find out soon as I am still working on getting my carb intake down a bit more.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

One last thing, before moving to Cornwall I lived in Hemel for 45 years. Cuttsfield Terrace then Northridge Way then Benchleys Road then Warners End (Quatermass Close) and finally, Coleridge Crescent in Woodhall Farm.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies.

Badcat - I'll deffo look into silken tofu recipes. Sounds like a winner!

Lee - How funny! I used to live on Elstree Road on Woodhall Farm, grew up there in fact! I hope Cornwall is good? Yup, low carbing can be hard on a veggie/vegan diet and a lot of the time you're swapping carbs for fat so you can't win either way! Luckily, I've managed to get some good proportions - especially porridge - try millet flakes and milled flax seeds in place of oats - you digest them more easily so they're better for you and, I believe, lower in fat. I mix mine with unsweetened Vive Soy milk (just like normal milk!) some nuts and seeds a few raisins or cranberrys for a little sweetness. Add a bit of ginger or cinamon for a lovely smell and flavour!

Kat - I've been warned off vegan cheese(!) but the tofu soft cheese is rather nice, I like to add it to wraps. you can buy it in Holland and Barratt or a Free From one from Tesco. and yes, thank goodness there is much more choice now!
