My last blood tests revealed vitamin D deficiency (20% below the norm).

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Try more oily fish, red meat, liver and sunshine or vitamin D tablets.

I think I will try a supplement. I already eat so much food that's supposedly rich in vitamin D...

Get out in the sun more, and vitamin d capsules are the best way.

Hi I was diagnosed with Vit D def last month and the doctor said that I was to take 10mg once a day as we cannot get Vit D from food apparently?? or get a SADD light which would also help failing that emigrate to a warmer climate

From the reading i did, i became convinced that vit D3 is better than D2 in terms of efficacy.
And we should take Vit K2 with the D3 in order to utilise it properly.
Some supplements are available already combined, which makes life simpler.

Vit k is essential but is found in a lot of veg.

D3 liquid drops in oil are excellent. More expensive but purer than tablets.

Your doctor may prescribe vit d tablets if asked but they are generally with added calcium and some of them include aspartame as well in the ingredients.

Some processed foods, are now fortified with vit D. I'm too tired at the moment to think of what they are, as I have to avoid them....

Hi,

I just wanted to emphasise that i was talking about Vit K2, which is often low in the Western diet.

Vit K1 is a different vitamin, with a different function. Since it is connected to blood clotting, care should be taken before supplementing with K1, since it can interact with certain blood thinning drugs or health conditions.

On the other hand, i believe that K2 can safely be taken in quantities that would be unfeasible in any normal way of eating, with no toxicity issues.

I also have low vitamin D (when I had a blood test it was too low to be read by the lab equipment!) My endo suggested 50000 unit capsules (the chemist makes them up specially in the compounding area). I took one every week until my levels were back to normal, now I just take one a month. These tablets quickly reduced my symptoms and worked really well for me. There are also 7000 unit tablets available, meant to be taken once a week, which is another option you might want to look into to quickly get your levels back up. Ask your doctor about these larger doses - they might be helpful for you, at least in the short term. As others have said, sunshine is great too!

what was the result? And what was the norm on your form?......usually in the uk you are classed deficient, insufficient, sufficient, etc, with deficient now being under 30 nmol/L, it used to be under 20, and insufficiency under 50,

Re how to alter, as others say, capsules will raise. 3 months of 400iu D3 capsules got me from deficient to 35. having a rest now as do not feel very well on it, a liver enzyme is suddenly up, never been up before, and gaining weight with no extra cals, all this may not be related at all, but looked at the research and the latest does not even seem to show much benefit for bones so far. Got a lot of questions, waiting to find answers. My problem is that on these figures, most of the world is either deficient or insufficient. If this is correct, how can that be?

Get more sun. And 20% below "normal" is probably not significant either.

so what would a good daily supplement be? 1000 iu for the d3?

and what about the K2? how much of that?
