Lowering HBA1C

Hi all,

Newly registered, but been lurking for around a year since diagnosis.

Quick background - I found out I had type 2 after some illness and a huge weight drop.
Been overweight my entire life, so losing weight without dieting (despite the dangers) was the best thing to happen to me! 9 stone lighter with high bloods, I'm now on pills (Metformin, 2 x 850g daily).

I haven't dramatically changed my diet, but have cut down some carbs, especially at night/

My last HBA1C test was 116. (Previous to this it was 99).

I'm going to have to go carb free in order to get this down, and I really want to take better care of this - but if I stick to it 100%, what timescale should I be looking at for reducing my daily BS reading to a safe, consistent level, and get my HBA1C to where it should be?

Thanks in advance!

Hi SRO and welcome

How long does it take? It varies but on the forums I have seen reported drops of 30-40 in 3 months, and the rest within 6 months, but that is people who work very hard at it. "Carb free" might not be necessary; you may be able to achieve it with say 30-50g of carbs a day, I don't know.

The key thing is to make a start and just do your best. Every point of HbA1c you drop will help you.

Thanks @CatLadyNZ

I've got a food plan (starting Thursday), so can allow some carbs in there, but getting this down is becoming a huge priority, so the sooner the better!

Hopefully the pills and the change in diet will do the trick!

Don't forget that there is always the possibility of Late onset T1. The symtpoms include being slim and/or having unexpectedly lost weight recently. If tests for this prove the point then medication beyond Metformin will be essential to control blood sugar. So if your weight gets down to 'normal' and with a low-carb diet you still have a high HBa1C then ask for T1 tests.
