Hi,

Has anyone had any small lumps come up after injecting tresiba? I have been on it for almost 4 years, but in the last week I have been coming up with a raised lump after taking the needle out.

Can anyone help with what might be causing this? Slightly worried! I’m sure it’s probably nothing but would rather ask and see if anyone might know.

Thanks in advance
Meg

Meg, hi, there's a thing called lipohypertrophy where fat cells around injection areas can become "fatter" and affect injections.

It can build up quite subtly and slowly over time so can be difficult to spot unless you're looking for it.

It often feels like a bit of soft avocado scoop under the skin, plumping up that area a bit, so maybe worthwhile having a close look at your usual injection areas.

Of course, this being T1, it could be a million and one other things, but it's worth considering whether it's lipo if only to rule it out.

It took a DSN to notice my lipohypertrophy. I hadn't noticed the swellings under the repeated injections in a couple of areas of my stomach. I always find it quite difficult to remember where I last injected. 'Left stomach' or 'right stomach' , which I try to note down in my injection record, isn't actually very precise, and then suddenly you've developed a no-go area where insulin may not be absorbed very effectively, and can form problem lumps in the injection sites. I was told never to inject in those particular areas, and I've moved my bolus injection sites onto my hips. But, again, I'll have to be careful not to let the same thing happen all over again in a different area! It might be worth getting your DSN to check your sites.

I’ve only just re-started injecting in my bum area so I’d be surprised if it was because of over injecting but you never know!

I got lipohypertrophy pretty bad in my arms and legs before and now avoid them sites until they’ve almost gone back to normal.

I’ll message my diabetic nurses about it this week and see what they reckon it is :)

Thank you for your responses!
