Hi All,
I have recently moved to UK form India and have still to see a doctor in Uk for my Diabetic checks. But I am a diabetic form couple of years now and use self-monitoring tools (Accu Chek Compact Plus) to keep check on my BG.
I am scheduled for a blood test coming Monday..
My Fasting BG is 6-7 mmol/l …it drops to 5-6 post breakfast as I have very low carb BF such as Oats, Atkins Muesli, All Barn Etc…
Today I checked my BG prior to lunch and it was 5.8mmol/l ..and I had a Pret A manger Super club sandwich infact 1 & ½ of them and after 1 hour my Bg was 8.5 and post 2 hours it was 8
So in short the Sandwich did not do well to me.
I am here all alone without family so can’t get a home cooked lunch. I really wanted some advice on what all stuff you can eat which will keep the BG in control especially when you don’t have option to get home cooked food and the cafeteria in office sucks …
I am really looking forward to specific food /sandwich/brands or other idea which can fill me up an also keeps the BG in check….
Help please guys ..i am not aware of much food to eat in UK (London)
BTW I work in Victoria so might have lots of option ….

Hi Sumit and welcome, this is a very helpful site so you will soon have suggestions pouring in.
I'm vegetarian, so my lunch is salad with cheese or eggs. Bread is maybe a no no, although I have found a small wholemeal pitta bread is nice filled with salad.
Make this at home, its much cheaper. You can have tuna or ham if you are a meat eater. I always finish with a greek yogurt with bluberries when at home I grind up some linseeds, I find it tasty and satisfying.

Hi 'Sumit', and welcome to the forum. :)

Burgen bread is good for sandwhiches. It is low in carbs, and I find it filling. You can get it at most of the main supermarkets.

I agree with dawn it is much better to make your own lunch to take with you to work because sandwiches are very high carb usually also any dsalads will either have rice or pasta base or will have a dressing that may contain sugar. Many of use use Bergen soya and linseed bread and find that ok in small quantities so you could try making your own sandwich ,be sure to put in lots of filling eg cheese, pickle, tomato, cucumber.or chicken tikka with salad ,I like a thick slice of ham rolled round a large portion of cream cheese you can hold it together with a little cocktail stick and then eat with your fingers (a bit messy take wet wipes with you) :!: If you buy a couple of small plastic containers with lids you can keep your salad seperate from your sandwich etc .There are lots of Delis around go and have a browse and pick up nice cheeses or meats and make your packed lunch into something special just for you .Enjoy :D

If there's a microwave at the office you could make yourself scrambled egg with cheese etc. If not burgen sandwich made at home is the best bet.

if your after lunches you don't have to make yourself pret do a breadless sandwich range - which I suppose is a posh name for a salad  - but they are good I have had the prawn one and a meat one and are quite filling.

subway do salad bowls - everything you can have on a sandwich but without the bread - make sure you ask for a salad bowl though not the side salad - and watch the dressings some have a lot of sugar - go for the mayo - I have one of these most Satudays and they are really filling.

Hi

It is carbohydrates which raise our blood sugars more than any other food group. You are eating carbohydrate breakfasts and lunches. You really need to look at changing to mainly protein/fat meals instead and that will reduce your blood sugars to the normal range quite quickly. Can you eat eggs for breakfast? What about tuna or chicken salads for lunch without any bread? In the evening some kind of meat or fish with a good mixed salad would do it.

If you are vegetarian then substitute for soya products - vegeburgers, veggy sausages etc. Remember that cereals of all kinds are very high in carbs and so is bread.

Hi Sumit - On the day I go into school, or if I'm travelling all day, I put in a plastic container: lots of chopped up meat so I can eat it with a fork; a hard boiled egg sliced, mayo, some olives, maybe cucumber or radish or green pepper or some cold cooked broccoli - anything to hand until there is enough food. I also take another small container with chopped up cheese, walnuts and blueberries for an afternoon snack. This gets me through from brekkies to dinner. I agree with the other posters that bread/wheat products are bad news quite often.

This routine of preparing your lunch either first thing in the morning or the night before really does get easy enough to manage without hassle, especially if you can stick it in a work fridge when you get there. I put it in a small insulated bag along with a tiny freezer pack and that does equally well for a few hours. It's also a lot cheaper than buying out!

Hi Dragongirl

your meals are just brilliant for diabetics, full of protein and goodness.
