Makes perfect sense to me too.How about skip lunch altogether and do some more sightseeing instead..
Just a thought...
Whereabouts are you going in Rome? I had the same problem last year, but I walked and walked which mitigated the effect of pasta and pizza. But not every restaurant is like that, many have pork chops and salad etc. Bread is dipped in basalmic and olive oil, just go easy. The Trastevere area has a great choice of eateries at good prices - its the student area

Edit to add: Apart from the bread this look pretty good

Have a coffee while she snacks..?Restaurants are ok and antipasti is a good choice for a first course but I like to eat my main meal in the evening so I just need some sort of snack at lunchtime. Not having lunch as @bulkbiker suggests would not impress my wife, I could just watch her eat I suppose.
I won't be having any pizza or pasta. Last year I went to Sicily and thought the odd pizza and pasta wouldn't do any harm. I was shocked to find my eyesight altered to such an extent that I couldn't drive the hire car at night. Fortunately it was back to normal after being home for a few days.I had the same problem last year, but I walked and walked which mitigated the effect of pasta and pizza.
