I am off for a long weekend in Rome soon and looking for low carb ideas for light lunches. Breakfast is ok, the hotel has a buffet with ham, cheese eggs etc. I know what to order in a restaurant for dinner but finding a substitute for a light lunch where I would have had a sandwich or roll is a problem I have had before on other trips. I could get more cheese and ham etc. from a supermarket and some salad but it would be great if there was something I could buy ready to eat from a cafe or stall.

Whereabouts are you going in Rome? I had the same problem last year, but I walked and walked which mitigated the effect of pasta and pizza. But not every restaurant is like that, many have pork chops and salad etc. Bread is dipped in basalmic and olive oil, just go easy. The Trastevere area has a great choice of eateries at good prices - its the student area

Edit to add: Apart from the bread this look pretty good

How about skip lunch altogether and do some more sightseeing instead..
Just a thought...

Makes perfect sense to me too.

There is no law saying you have to eat 3 meals a day. Just eat a bigger breakfast and evening meal instead.

Restaurants are ok and antipasti is a good choice for a first course but I like to eat my main meal in the evening so I just need some sort of snack at lunchtime. Not having lunch as @bulkbiker suggests would not impress my wife, I could just watch her eat I suppose :(.

yes. have a huge breakfast, and pick up a bag of nuts or some good quality dark chocolate, and nibble on the hoof (as required).

I often find that I need a sit down when on hol. all that art, history and culture gets a bit wearing after a while (joke! I really ain't that cultured!). So we have been using cafes as rest stops. Mr B loves this, because he can re-caffeinate each time, but I get a bit bored with watching. Park benches would work just as well for me. :D

Have a coffee while she snacks..?

I'm currently on a 6 day break in Cadiz/Seville and I can always find something on a Menu to eat. I haven't been to Italy since diagnosis but I am sure there will always be plenty of options.

I won't be having any pizza or pasta. Last year I went to Sicily and thought the odd pizza and pasta wouldn't do any harm. I was shocked to find my eyesight altered to such an extent that I couldn't drive the hire car at night. Fortunately it was back to normal after being home for a few days.

Weather permitting, as @Brunneria says, a park bench or picnic bench is great with some picnic stuff - cold meats, salad, tomatoes, yogurt, cheese, whatever the Italian shops sell for picnics and your wife can have a baguette. (lucky lady)
