A man is pulled up in front of a Magistrate for killing a Heron, a protected species. When asked why he did it, he explained that the Heron had continually raided his fish pond, eating his expensive ornamental carp.

He had tried everything to repel the Heron with bird scarers, nets and decoys but the Heron always managed to get to the fish.

In mitigation he explained it was an accident and thought that a blast from his shotgun might have finally scared the Heron away, but as he pulled the trigger the Heron flew into the cloud of shot and was killed.

When asked what he had done with the dead bird the man said he had done the environmentally friendly thing, and eaten it.

The magistrate believed his story and found him not guilty.

As the defendant was leaving the dock, the Magistrate asked him what Heron tasted like.

"Very nice" he replied, "Much like Swan!
