Magnesium deficiency

My Dad was taken into hospital yesterday after having some spasms which, amongst other things (tests hopefully) the doctors have attributed to magnesium deficiency. He's 89, physically weak but mentally sharp, and has for the last few months been on intermittent oxygen for emphesema - his oxygen levels are actually very good now. He's also on a cocktail of drugs for blood pressure, gout, and other things including the inevitable statin. He's not diabetic as far as I know, and stopped smoking several years ago after a lifetime 40 a day habit.

He has other symptoms associated with this such as lack of appetite, apathy, irritability, but those are so generic as to hardly be conclusive. After a quick internet search I'm assuming either he's not getting enough Mg in his food (well he doesn't eat enough of anything really) or something is suppressing its absorption and he is excreting it all.

Does anyone have any direct or indirect experience of this condition? Any suggestions welcome.
 
Is one of his blood pressure tablets a water tablet? My main problems with a slightly low level of magnesium were muscle cramps and I'm sure the deficiency also helped to cause my irregular heart beat. Sorry that's not much help is it? But that's as far as my own experience takes me.
 
I'm sorry to hear about your dad, Rod. It must be very difficult and stressful for you to see him ill. I hope you get some answers.
 

Thanks Zand, it could be, and he has been suffering from occasional cramps. He's also had carotid artery surgery and one of his cataracts fixed, in fact this episode might delay (again) his appointment for his other cataract which will irritate him more! He should be home later this week so I can call him and see him on my way home at the weekend (he has his wife to look after him). Frankly I'd like him out of hospital asap before he gets some norovirus or similar there.
 
Um yes. I probably shouldn't say this because I don't want to alarm you. My Dad died of MRSA which he caught in hospital. Just get your Dad home asap!
 
Spasms are symptom of magnesium decency. I'm an avid user of this stuff. I buy a 250ml liquid supplement. They give you a cap and a 20ml dosage contains 250mg of magnesium. I have found the stuff wonderful. Recently I was back in hospital for swelling in my legs, twice I was called back for x-rays and two ultrasound scans. They found no clots but could not explain why my legs were so swollen. I bought a bottle of the stuff and no kidding, just 3 days later the swelling had gone. Its also good for my BG, as insulin needs magnesium to work efficiently.

Other benefits I have noticed are, increased focus, not as tired, no more brain fog, muscles don't hurt anymore and I get a decent sleep.

I eat hazelnuts as there is lots of magnesium in them and also very high mono-unsaturated fats
 
Started taking magnesium tablets 5 days ago and for past last 2 days the pains in legs that had returned are diminishing in the evenings. Still bad in mornings but that is a slight improvement.. So hopefully can carry on improving...
